Turning to coaching, he guided East Perth to two WAFL reserves premierships and was later senior coach at Ainslie in the ACTFL in 1986.
He then returned to Perth and spent two years as the general manager of the Western Australian Football Development Trust and a further two years as CEO of the Western Australian Football Commission before being appointed as CEO of the West Coast Eagles in 1990.
Appointed as CEO of the Geelong Football Club in 1999, Cook has overseen a complete overhaul of the once-struggling club's finances as well as being a key supporter of current coach Mark Thompson along with club president Frank Costa.

The year of 1906, when the club was admitted to the WAFA (the WAFA became the WAFL in 1908), is generally accepted as the birth date of the East Perth Football Club.
The motion for East Perth was moved again and seconded by the delegate from East Fremantle.
Whilest East Perth may have finished second-last in their first season, 5 wins was pretty good for a debut - in fact at the time it was an Australian record for a club debuting in a senior league which remained unbroken until Swan Districts won 7 games in their first WAFL season in 1934.

After defeating East Fremantle by 22 and 7 points in the premiership deciders of 1920 and 1921 respectively the Royals arguably reached their peak during 1922, and this was clearly evidenced during a five week mid-season tour of the goldfields and eastern states.
The extent of East Perth's perceived dominance of the competition was clearly illustrated in 1924 when a record eight Royals players were included in the state team which travelled to Hobart for the interstate carnival.
Many Australian football clubs of the 40s and 50s sought to instigate an improvement in fortunes by introducing new, tougher-sounding nicknames, [see footnote 9] but what was actually needed in such instances was more a change in attitude, coupled as often as not with the recruitment of better players.
