"PORTLEMOUTH, (EAST) a small village, five miles S. of Kingsbridge, is picturesquely seated on an eminence on the east side of Salcombe haven, near its confluence with the sea.
An entrenchment on the hill is supposed to have been used in assaulting Salcombe Castle, on the opposite side of the estuary.
Portlemouth commands an extensive view of the English Channel, as well as of the estuary and its creeks, as high as Kingsbridge.

This was so that I could catch the ferry across to East Portlemouth, from where the walk was due to start.
I came across a couple of sets of stepping stones today - the first was at Waterhead, which is to the east of East Portlemouth, where a long set of stepping stones took a footpath across a tidal section of the river.
On the other side of the bridge head uphill along the road to the east of North Pool before it descend steeply to cross over the stream at the eastern end of Frogmore Creek before it ends at a T-junction in Frogmore.

Park up in East Prawle (where there's the Pig's Nose pub), and follow the narrow country lane down to the coast path.
To get to Salcombe, you'll need to take the little passenger ferry across the river from East Portlemouth - it's a nice, relaxing way to end the walk.
It took us around three hours to complete the walk from East Prawle to East Portlemouth, although we did stop quite a bit to take photos and enjoy the views.

Failure to do this could result in problems for future Portlemouth plaice anglers.
This area is off limits while the ferry is running but from late evening until the early hours of the morning it becomes an excellent venue.

It is quite a tragic and moving sight, although it is a shame that you cannot walk amongst the buildins anymore.
There is a regular ferry running between East Portlemouth and Salcombe, so we decided that we would meet up in the larger town as it would be easier to get to.
The last ferry leaves at five in the afternoon, so I had to get to the landing stage before then, which I thankfully managed with plenty of time to spare.

The beaches are very picturesque and so get busy in summer.
