	North Stradbroke Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		North Stradbroke Island is an Australian island in the state of Queensland, 30 km southeast of the capital Brisbane.
		As an alternative, development of the island for seaside residential use was mooted and in 1970 a bridge from the mainland via Russell Island was under serious consideration by the Queensland government.
		North Stradbroke Island is known for its long clean white beaches in the east, its peacefulness due to a long isolation and its rich diversity of nature varying from whales passing Point Lookout to the many wild orchids in the interior of the island.

	Walkabout - Stradbroke Island
		The islands, they were separated by a storm in 1896, are only 13 km from the seaside suburbs of Cleveland and Redland Bay by regular ferry services.
		Although the islands (at the time it was just one island) were sighted by both Captain James Cook and Matthew Flinders it wasn't until 1827 that the name Stradbroke, after the then Earl of Stradbroke, was given to the island by his son, Captain H. Rous, the commander of the HMS Rainbow.
		Stradbroke Island's most famous resident was the late Kath Walker (Oodgeroo Noonuccal), the highly regarded Aboriginal poet, who was born on North Stradbroke, established the Noonuccal Nughie Education and Cultural Centre on the island, and who has been at the forefront of attempts to curb the large scale sandmining which has occurred.

	Long Island Community Histories
		The first Presbyterian church was built in Middle Island in 1766, with Rev. David Rose as pastor; he also was the pastor of the South Haven church until his death in 1799.
		It was a stage coach stop for the stages that ran along the Middle Country road from the city to the east end villages before the railroad was opened to Greenport in 1844.
		East of Ridge at the edge of the Longwood School District is the tiny community of Lake Panamoka.

		The island is 98% National Park, protecting the flora, fauna, sandy coastline, freshwater lakes, wetlands and forests.
		Moreton Island was once occupied by the Ngugi Aboriginal people but European settlement began in 1848 with the building of a pilot station near Bulwer on the North-western side of the island.
		Their oldest son Arthur (aged 17 in 1943) had left the island in the late 1930s to become a fisherman at Maryborough and their youngest son Norman (aged 11) was rarely seen although he did visit the naval station from time to time.

		Middleton was appointed navy commissioner at Portsmouth, England in 1664, and became the surveyor of the British navy in 1667 (Latham and Mathews 1983 [V]: 314; [VIII]: 62).
		In his 1680 will Nathaniel claims full ownership of the island and its improvements on the basis of the fine (L500) he was obliged to pay to the Dutch during the Third Anglo-Dutch war of 1673-4 on behalf of his English partner, Middleton, and his brother, Constant (Nathaniel Sylvester 1680).
