All of the aforementioned maps prove that the East Sea was widely known as the Sea of Korea during the 17th and 18th centuries.
However, since the East Sea was referred to as "Sea of Japan" in La Perouse's map of 1797, maps produced thereafter in Europe began to use the term "Sea of Japan" with greater frequency.
New editions of The Limits of Oceans and Seas were published in 1937, 1952, and 1986 and to date, the East Sea remains as "Sea of Japan" in the document.

 East Sea, Sea of Japan - JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
Until the 19th century, this sea area was called such names as the "Sea of Korea," the "East Sea", or the "Oriental Sea" in maps published in Europe.
Apart from the historical validity of the use of the "East Sea", the Republic of Korea underlines that it is inappropriate to name a sea area surrounded by many countries after a single country.
However, pending a final agreement on a common name for the sea in question, the Republic of Korea is of the view that, as an interim measure, both "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" should be used simultaneously in accordance with the general rules of international cartography.

 Oxfam Australia :: Polliewatch
Unless the Government of East Timor can access large increases in revenue flows or donor support continues at present levels, there will be a major decrease in development programs carried out in the country over the coming years, resulting in a consequent decline in people’s welfare.
The establishment of the JPDA was derived from the 1989 Timor Gap Treaty between Australia and Indonesia, a treaty that heavily favoured Australia because the major oil and gas fields lie in territory claimed by Australia extending to the edge of the Australian continental shelf, sending the vast bulk of revenue flows to Canberra.
However, when East Timor pointed out that it could seek to have the matter independently adjudicated by the International Court of Justice, the Australian Government formally withdrew from the dispute settlement procedures offered by the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea with respect to maritime boundary disputes.

Early in 1999, the National Geographic Society recognized the fact that the term Sea of Japan was legitimately disputed by the South Koreans.
In keeping with the Society’s standard place-name convention, we recognize that where a geographical feature is shared by more than one nation, and its name is disputed, we use the most commonly recognized form of the name first and label the disputed name in parentheses.
Thus, on our maps, the Sea of Japan appears as the primary label for this feature while the East Sea appears below in parentheses.
