The term East Shore is frequently applied to a series of neighborhoods within New York City, USA's borough of Staten Island.
This factor has contributed to the East Shore becoming the most politically conservative locality on Staten Island, and for that matter, in all of New York City.
Points of interest located on the East Shore include Historic Richmond Town, the nearby Tibetan Museum on Lighthouse Hill, Moravian Cemetery (where members of the Vanderbilt family are buried) and a significant portion of the Staten Island Greenbelt.Also the beautiful woodcutters estates.

It is situated immediately to the south of the Staten Island side of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
South Beach was the terminus of a branch of the Staten Island Railway to which service was halted in 1953; by the 1980s the tracks of this line had been uprooted, and tract homes now stand on the original right-of-way in many places.
This roadway, which was the only portion of the "Shore Front Drive" proposed by Robert Moses to be actually built, was later renamed Father Capodanno Boulevard, after a Roman Catholic chaplain who was killed in action during the Vietnam War, and runs from near the Verrazano Bridge to Midland Beach.

Staten Island has carried the burdon of living with such a large dump for too long (the first truck load of garbage was dumped on the then remote swampland 48 years ago on April 16 1948).

In New York the Britton Cottage, originally built on the east shore of Staten Island over a period of time starting in the seventeenth century, was constructed mostly of glacial outwash and shore cobbles.
This building is exceptional in the effects of lightness due to the open arches and porches on the front and back façades that contrast both with the material used to build them and even more with the solidity of the south wall along 36th Avenue with its large asymmetrical bay.
Of special interest is the fact that the property lines along Bell Boulevard to the east and 36th Avenue to the south are marked with low walls of similar stones, although laid without mortar and consisting of a larger proportion of squared-off stones to ensure the stability of the wall.

The principal Staten Island connecting highway would be the seven-mile long Clove Lakes Expressway across the northern part of Staten Island, from the Goethals Bridge to the Narrows Bridge.

The operation of the original Staten Island Railroad was from Cranford Junction, NJ to St. George, Staten Island via the North Shore line, and then on to Tottenville or South Beach.
This station is "timetable east" of St. George and thus not on the "main line" of SIRT.

When Staten Island University Hospital recently explained that it only meant to take a supporting role to the proposed Island exchange, it considered a serious blow to the program.
The AIDS Task Force and the hospital are listed in the February 1999 application to the state Health Department for permission to run a mobile van that would allow drug addicts to exchange their dirty needles for clean ones, reducing the spread of AIDS.

Anyway, for many years, NY 440 did follow Richmond Parkway-Avenue to the Willowbrook, but was finally routed onto the West Shore Expressway when it was completed, to have an all-freeway route through the island, and that's when this shield was added.
Expressway stub at Victory Blvd. Staten Island was planned to have a much more extensive network of freeways than it does.
The West Shore Expressway, which now carries NY 440 from the Outerbridge Crossing to I-278, would have been a reference route or perhaps even an Interstate (if not a different state route), and there may even have been an East Shore Expressway as well.
