  The East Side Gallery in Berlin
The East Side Gallery is a portion of the Berlin Wall of approximately 1,3 km.
At this spot of the town, the border between the east and the west of the town were the edge of the river.
It was baptised "East Side Gallery", "the gallery on the side east", to recall that this wall had been side east of Berlin.

The East Side Gallery is a special place, where art has become the expression for a unique point in time of the history of a separated Germany.
In spite of the gallery being protected, through the initiative by single artists and supporters of the East Side Gallery and by the historical building code, the images that used to go around the world are now flaking off and the Wall itself is crumbling.

Whereas on the West Berlin's side the Wall was used as a good object for painting the East Berlin's side was grey and white.

This section is crumbling, affected by damp from a nearby river which causes rust on the iron bands inside it that in turn causes the concrete to crack.
"The East Side Gallery is the longest and last stretch on its historical place, and we have to save this first of all," says one of the artists, Guenter Schaeffer.

I would touch the West side of the wall and then I would touch the East side of the wall.
But it goes deeper than that, into their character, into the character of the city, and the intuitive awareness of the still existing East/West divide is so deep it is almost unexplainable.

A large section of the East Side of the wall had been left standing and artists from around the world painted murals on its side.
