"East Side Story" is the greatest album of Squeeze's long, distinguished career.
Originally intended as a double album (with hopes for Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Dave Edmunds and someone else who I can't recall at the moment), East Side Story is the band's most perfectly formed album.
Squeeze hit their peak here, and their albums of the past 20 years have often come close to the heights reached on "East Side Story", without ever topping it.

East Side Story was originally planned as a double album with each side produced by a different "hot" producer -- Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and Paul McCartney were the proposed lineup.

And while only Elvis Costello (along with Roger Bechirian) ended up doing the job, save for one track by Edmunds, Costello's push for decidedly un-Squeeze-like material and sympathetic production style resulted in not only the band's most diverse but also their most creatively rewarding album to date.

City Pages - East Side Story
Stereo Type Click--Paizon, fellow MC Shawnski, and MC/producer D-Mil--first caught the attention of those of us on the opposite side of the river with last year's Underground Embargo, a slow boil of a debut album recorded out of P Family studios in east St. Paul.
Even as they make plans ("very long-term") for an East Side St. Paul club, the STC still hold out hope that downtown Minneapolis might make room for live hip-hop shows in clubs that don't pander solely to a vanilla temperament with jiggy, smiling, tip-your-bartenders jams.
He must have a hell of an arm, considering how deep within the East Side we are, sitting in the Click's home studio near Harding High School.

The albums first single is “This Side of Paradise.” Musically, it sounds similar to “East Side Story,” but it kind of has a John Mellancamp sound to it.
The albums title, “Room Service,” comes from the fact that much of the album was recorded while Bryan was on the road.
This album was previously only available overseas and it debuted at #1 on the U.K. album charts.

 Ridiculous - Reviews
Although there have been, let's be honest, some lacklustre releases in recent years, the Squeeze sound has remained constant and reassuring, inspiring further loyalty among the fans who pray for a glimmer of the genius that ignited Cool For Cats, Argybargy, and East Side Story some 15 years ago.
The remembrances-of-things-past style is most effective on the album's first single, "This Summer" a breezy tune about being desperately in love.
Squeeze's millionth LP has a lyrical verve and a slight musical swagger you'd think was now beyond them.

The best New Wave album of the year, East Side Story was a harbinger of things to come in the music world, a collection of uptempo pop tunes with attitude, an excitingly diverse blend of musical styles penned by the songwriting duo of Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford.
