The east Suffolk branch from Ipswich serves Woodbridge, Saxmundham, Halesworth, and Beccles, with branches to Felixstowe, to Framlingham, to Aldeburgh, and to Lowestoft; while the Southwold Light railway connects with that town from Halesworth.
Suffolk comprises 21 hundreds, and for administrative purposes is divided into the counties of East Suffolk (557,854 acres) and West Suffolk (390,914 acres).
The county of Suffolk (Sudfole, Suthfolc) was formed from the south part of the kingdom of East Anglia which had been settled by the Angles in the latter half of the 5th century.

Working practices in Suffolk were different from those elsewhere and the large numbers of horses at work on farms in the area were such that the skill of the horseman reached its zenith in Suffolk.

 Lowestoft and North-east Suffolk - the Sunrise Coast
Although part of East Anglia and close to the Norfolk border, the area is not 'very flat' as once described by Noel Coward but is gently rolling with some wide flood plains leading to the coast and beaches, some with full holiday facilities and others much more wild and remote.
Some of the land is fairly low-lying and needs draining, the evidence of which is the number of 'windmills' dotted about the landscape, not really windmills but windpumps, and some areas of wetland have been preserved as a natural habitat and refuge for local and migratory wildlife.
The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton, near Bungay incorporates the 446th Bomb Group Museum, the Royal Observer Corps Museum and RAF Bomber Command Museum as well as having a collection of 25 historic aircraft.

ALARMING FIRE AT DISS On Friday morning se'nnight, about one o'clock, the inhabitants of Diss were aroused from their slumbers by cries of "Fire!" and the ringing of the fire bells, and in about half an hour the streets were thronged by people, hastily dressed, on their way to the scene of the conflagration.
The east side of Crown Street, from the Baptist Chapel to Mr SMITH's chemist shop at the corner, is occupied by Messrs HEYWOOD (flsmiths), DOVE (watchmaker), Bullock (cooper), and J. EVANS (currier), their respective dwelling houses and shops forming a line fronting the street.
Most of these buildings were constructed of very inflammable materials, and this fact, coupled with their exceedingly dry condition in consequence of the long drought, excited great fears of a sweeping destruction of property.
