The first evidence of this Syrian monasticism was the B'nai Q'yama and the B'nat Q'yama (the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant), an ascetic group which began in the third century and gained ascendancy in the church during the fourth century.

Malankara Orthodox Church is an ancient Church of India and it traces its origin to as far back as A. 52, when St. Thomas one of the Disciples of Jesus Christ came to India and established Christianity in the South Western parts of the sub-continent.
Christian writers and representatives of the Churches at least from the 4th century refer to the evangelistic apostle Thomas in India and the Indian Christians ascribe the origin of their Church to this event in the first century.

From a letter of 5 East Syrian bishops, written to their Patriarch in Babylon (in 1504), it is known that there were in Malabar about thirty thousand families of St.Thomas Christians their co-religionists; they have begun to build new churches, and that they were prosperous in every respect and living in peace and security.
The church of St.Thomas Christians founded by St.Thomas was connected with the Church of East Syria till the 16th century.
All the 16th century evidences are unanimous that the church identity of the Thomas Christians was with the East Syrian Church.

The openness of the Thomas Christians to the East Syrian Church and other churches was the result of their awareness of the concept of the communion of churches.
Churches or places, which were not centers of Christian knowledge, did not develop their own liturgies, but received them from centers which were near, or dear to them.
Another important conclusion is that the Church in India is not the result of the Mission of the Church of the East to India like the Mission of Alopen to China in 635 AD etc. The Indian Church is of apostolic origin.
