East Village, Manhattan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The East Village is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City.
The neighborhood is bounded by 14th Street on the north, the East River on the east, Houston Street on the south, and, roughly, the Bowery and Third Avenue on the west.
Other than geography, the East Village's most notable commonalities with Greenwich Village are a colorful history, vibrant social and cultural outlets, and street names that often diverge from the norm.

Several other writers were also growing restive with Jaakov's leadership, for his manner of criticizing their work wasted a lot of time and took much of the joy out of writing for the Underground.
And thus the East Village Other, which had scored so many "firsts" in its history, was to remain unique even in its decline—it also became the first underground paper (and to my knowledge the only one) ever to advocate bombing its own offices.

The other side of the East Village exhibition
Artist Mark Kostabi, who first made his mark in the East Village in the heady 1980s, was less disappointed about being excluded from “East Village USA,” the New Museum of Contemporary Art’s retrospective about the era, than he was about being shut out from the show’s Dec. 9 opening.
Several other slighted artists — also with a token presence in the show — consider themselves pivotal figures in the edgy, rebellious East Village art scene that enjoyed a vibrant, albeit brief heyday that was cut short, in large part, by the impact of AIDS.
Kostabi, by his own admission, was very much an outsider in the East Village scene, and if the reason to exclude him and Prol was cliquish by nature, it does not answer Rhonda Zwillinger’s absence from the New Museum’s walls.

Nowadays, Kiesewalter, 37, is creating his own impression with the East Village Opera Company, an ensemble he cofounded in 2001 with vocalist and fellow Canadian Tyley Ross.
In a city with no shortage of fine operatic institutions, Kiesewalter and Ross stand apart from the crowd: Their “company” is in actuality a rock band augmented with a string section, its repertoire a mix of arias and songs performed with pop-music amplification and theatrical flair.
Unapologetically grandiose, the East Village Opera Company flies where countless other classical-crossover efforts have plummeted because Kiesewalter, Ross and their bandmates approach their pop-music leanings with the same respect and experience that they apply to their classical source material.
