The Walker River Basin is bordered on the southwest by the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the west by the Pine Nut Mountains, on the north by the Desert Mountains, on the east by Gabbs Valley and Gillis Mountain ranges, and on the southeast by the Excelsior Mountains.
Walker Lake's waters are of relatively poor quality, characterized by high concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS), consisting mostly of salts, relatively high temperatures, low dissolved oxygen, and the presence of hydrogen sulfide.
Specifically, in 1906, 50,809 acres were added to the Walker River Indian Reservation; in 1918, 34,000 acres were added; in 1928, 69,000 acres were added; and in 1936 171,200 acres were added, which, along with minor adjustments to the reservation's boundaries, brought the it's total area up to 324,323 acres.

The East Walker River, a river whose legendary brown and rainbow trout fishery has rebounded dramatically from a huge fish kill in 1988, faces a new threat caused by an oil spill by a truck accident in December.
The river made national headlines during the drought of 1988-89, when the East Walker Irrigation District drained the river, destroying the trophy fishery after tons of silt poured into the river, smothering the fish.

On December 30, 2000, though, the river took another bullet, when a truck carrying approximately 3,600 gallons of heating oil overturned, killing the driver and dumping its load into the river, three miles downstream from Bridgeport Dam.
This, combined with winter temperatures and low flows in the river, has kept the oil from dispersing immediately, helping clean-up crews, which were at work almost immediately, placing booms and nets across the river to trap blobs of oil floating downstream.
The California stretch of the East Walker is closed to fishing in winter, but the Rosachi Ranch portion in Nevada is open all year, with catch-and-release, single, barbless hook restrictions.

On June 8, the day after Jeff Kaiser of South Lake Tahoe gave me photos from a recent trip to the East Walker, I was wading in semi-darkness at 5:30 am.
Jeff and a friend had fished the meadow section of the river, a half mile or so downstream from the Bridgeport dam, finding great action fishing nymphs for rainbows and browns up to five pounds.
This river is an incredibly rich fishery, providing miles of good public access in both California and Nevada.
