The area originally called Williamsburg is today referred to as "South Williamsburg" and occupied mainly by the Yiddish-speaking Satmar Hassidim, who continue to wear the traditional dress of their ancestors in Europe and adhere closely to Jewish religious law.
At one point in the 19th century Williamsburg possessed 10% of the wealth of the United States and was the engine of American growth.
In 1898 Brooklyn itself became one of five boroughs within the City of Greater New York, and its Williamsburg neighborhood was opened to closer connections with the rest of the new city.

The physical differences between the Williamsburg and Brooklyn Bridges - one noble, one barely functional - embody the socio-economic differences between the respective neighborhoods they connect, at least at the time when the bridges were built.
Williamsburg (spelled "Williamsburgh" at the time) became an independent city at just the moment when the New York area was set to become the most important port and financial center in the Western Hemisphere, just after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.
Williamsburg was also a notable vacation spot for the super-rich, with resorts catering to the likes of Commodore Vanderbilt and James Fisk.

The East Harlem feast lasted until the late 1960’s, before the neighborhood could no longer support the time honored tradition as many of the offspring of the local Italian descendants moved out and into more improved economic areas such as the Bronx, Long Island and New Jersey.
Then in 1971 descendants from East Harlem who moved out and into the NY borough of the Bronx, started a Giglio festival to replace the one that their fore-fathers held years prior in East Harlem.
Then in 1999, descendants from Williamsburg, East Harlem and Astoria who moved out of their local neighborhood and in to various towns across Long Island, came together and formed the Long Island Giglio Association.

I happened to be riding across the Williamsburg Bridge bikepath this night and noticed that at the midpoint of the bridge, the temporary fence separating the interim bike path from the brand new one under construction was open for once.
The Brooklyn entrance to the temporary southern Williamsburg path is a steep ramp with a narrow passage.
