 East of Eden
I first saw East of Eden out of curiosity - James Dean was not a cultural icon then but rather an almost forgotten actor who met a tragic end when my crop of teenagers were in grade school.
When Kazan was casting East of Eden, he took great care in choosing Cal. While the Steinbeck novel was a multigenerational epic, the movie adaptation only covered the last third of the book and Cal is on screen for all but a couple of minutes.
I was disappointed that East of Eden had not yet been released in DVD in America by 2000, so I managed to get a Hong Kong release from Ebay, and felt that I was truly seeing it for the first time.

In East of Eden, James Dean successfully resurrects his tortured soul act and embodies the character of Cal Trask; a young man who desperately wants to find some common ground with his father but can't quite seem to get out of his brother's wide shadow.
Many of the film's most touching moments were slightly over the top but I guess that overacting -dropping to your knees while crying etc- was in fashion back then and I actually enjoyed seeing the flurry of emotions explode from the actors.
East of Eden really is a great movie and I think it will always remain a classic must-see film.
