Augustus Pablo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After releasing a few more singles, Pablo came out with "East of the River Nile", a unique blend of East Asian and Jamaican sounds, and the song became a moderate hit.
This was followed by East of the River Nile (1978, Original Rockers 1979 and Rockers Meets King Tubbys In A Firehouse, another acclaimed hit album.
That same year, Rockers Come East re-established his career, and he began to release a series of critically acclaimed though somewhat inaccessible albums in the 1990s, including Blowing With the Wind and also producing several, such as Night and Day (Dawn Penn) and Jah Made Them All (Yami Bolo).

Pablo was, meanwhile, an important record producer and innovator of dub, and though there are hints of dub effects on "East of the River Nile," it is basically played through by a band.
Or at least, that's how it sounds, though certainly most Jamaican music of the era was assembled in the studio, often using pre-existing rhythms to which one would add the soprano and tenor voices of persons or instruments.
"East of the River Nile," like the other best Pablo records (notably "Original Rockers") is so quiet in its intensity, so still at its heart, that it obviously constitutes a rasta religious discipline.

East Of The River Nile in 1978 remains his most compelling instrumental set after This Is Augustus Pablo.
Those instrumentals are cornerstones of modern dub reggae, particularly those he recorded in the mid-70's, including the albums ''King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown'' (a 1976 album of Pablo instrumentals remixed by the engineer and producer King Tubby) and ''East of the River Nile'' from 1978.

One of the most influential albums in the history of reggae music was 1977’s East of the River Nile.
By then, Augustus Pablo (Horace Swaby) had already begun carving an impressive career — but Nile would assure his place in history alongside such production legends as King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry.
Just the mesmerizing title track alone — described by liner notesman Randall Grass as “a hypnotic bass-and-drum pattern topped by jazzy guitar accents and snaky melodica riffs bathed in discreet washes of reverb” — is enough reason to investigate the legacy.

The late Jamaican producer's 1976 album King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown also helped popularize dub, the echo-laden strain of reggae that continues to influence club and chill-out music.
Released in 1978, East of the River Nile is a more straightforward instrumental work but features many of the same elements as King Tubby: deep bass lines, clattering drums, percussive guitar riffs and plenty of Pablo's delicate keyboard melodies.
Suggesting both Les Baxter's lounge exotica and a reggae-fied version of Booker T. and the MG's' wordless soul, the slinky title track serves as a testimony to its creator's meditative but body-moving funk.
