Ross and Cromarty lies south of Sutherland and Dornoch Firth, west of the North Sea and Moray Firth, north of Beauly Firth and Inverness-shire and east of the strait of the Minch.
Thus Ross and Cromarty, though the third largest in size, is the least populated county in Scotland, excepting Sutherland, Inverness and Argyll.
The Rosses held what is now Easter Ross; the Munroes the small tract around Ben Wyvis, including Dingwall; the Macleods Lewis, and, in the mainland, the district between Loch Maree and Loch Torridon; the MacDonalds of Glengarry, Coygach, and the district between Strome Ferry and Kyle of Lochalsh, and the Mackenzies the remainder.

In consequence, however, of the treason of John Macdonald, 4th and last lord of the Isles and 12th earl of Ross, the earldom was again vested in the crown (1476).
The county of Ross was constituted in 1661, and Cromarty in 1685 and 1698, both being consolidated into the present county in 1889 (see Cromarty, county).

Easter Ross is a loosely defined area in the east of Ross, Highland, Scotland.
The name is used in the constituency name Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, which is the name of both a British House of Commons constituency and a Scottish Parliament constituency.
The two constituencies have however different boundaries, because the boundaries of the Commons Easter Ross are different from those of the Scottish Parliament Easter Ross.

Easter Ross emerged as the stronghold of Clan Ross, and it is believed that the first Earl, Malcolm Macbeth, who lived in the early twelfth century, allied his family to O'Beolan of the great Irish royal house of Tara, by the marriage of his daughter to an O'Beolan priest.
In 1309, William of Ross and the Earl of Sutherland, his former ward, were the only two earls present at the first Parliament held by Robert the Bruce.
The Earls of Ross after the O'Beolans were the Leslies, Sir John Stewart, (an annexation of the title by James I from 1424 until 1427), the MacDonalds, and a forfeiture of the title to the crown in 1476 until Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley was created Earl of Ross in 1565 by Elizabeth I of England.

The name Ross County Football Club was chosen and the present ground, Victoria Park in Dingwall, Ross-Shire, became the club’s permanent home.
The club soon became a focal point for all of Easter Ross, (Ross-Shire and as far a-field as the Isle of Skye in Wester Ross) with its enviable location near the shores of the Cromarty Firth and a short drive from the Heartland of Clan Ross, Balnagowan Castle in the parish of Kilmuir.
