Eastern California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It generally refers to the strip of California to the east of the crest of the Sierra Nevada, or to the easternmost counties of California:
Eastern California does not fit the stereotypes of California, and is more related in culture and geography to southeastern Oregon and northwestern Nevada.
Eastern California is also very sparsely populated (except for the area around Lake Tahoe), and tends to be politically conservative, much like the rest of the rural Western United States.

California Geological Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The Basin and Range Province lies in eastern and northeastern California, and is typified by a series of generally north-trending mountain ranges averaging 80 km in length and 8-24 km in width, uplifted primarily along normal faults (Nelson, 1981) to heights 300 to 1500 meters relative to the intermontane valleys that separate the ranges.
The eastern margin of the Salton Trough is bordered by several low- relief mountain ranges that contain evidence of large-scale translation along the San Andreas fault; displaced units occur in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north and the adjoining Castaic Block, both subprovinces of the Transverse Ranges.
The eastern margin of the trough is greatly influenced by the presence of the San Andreas fault.

Eastern California shear zone puzzles seismologists
Residents and seismologists in Northern California focus on the San Andreas Fault, but a Penn State researcher thinks more questions should be asked about the Eastern California Shear Zone, a fault that ends or dissipates without a clear connection.
The Eastern California Shear Zone runs roughly parallel to the San Andreas Fault from the gulf of California and is a wide area in western Nevada.
The movement on the Eastern California Shear Zone — 10 to 12 millimeters per year -- makes up 25 percent of the total movement of the North American Plate.

A Precise Petroglyph Equinox Marker in Eastern California
Petroglyphs at site INY272 in eastern California (Heizer and Baumhoff, 1962) comprise a solar calendrical observatory, with rayed circles, spirals, and other patterns evidently marking the times of at least the summer solstice, equinoxes, and possibly cross-quarter days, with distinctive patterns of light and shadow at sunset or sunrise.
The Pit River Indians, in northern California, apparently bisected the angle between the solstice and equinox stations (I.e., geometric method) to represent the cross-quarter day in constructing solar medicine wheels (Buckskin, 1985).
In evaluating the solar petroglyphs at INY272, it is necessary to remember that eastern California is seismically active, and that the entire site may have sunk or been raised a few meters or rotated a degree or two in the past.

Soakers Bible : The Source for Hot Springs Eastern California
Eastern California is a beautiful area to visit, and it's even nicer when you stop for a hot bath, or ten.
Soaking opportunities range from the fully developed Grover Hot Springs State Park with concrete swimming and soaking pools, to the totally undeveloped areas like Buckeye, where hot water gushes from a cliff and runs down into many rock pools in the creek.
With hot springs dotting the eastern flanks of the Sierras, you can enjoy all these activities and stop for a soak a couple times a day.
