Eastern Curlews have very long legs, allowing them to wade in boggy areas and moorland in their breeding region, where other shorter-legged waders are unable to go.
The Eastern Curlew is found on intertidal mudflats and sandflats, often with beds of seagrass, on sheltered coasts, especially estuaries, mangrove swamps, bays, harbours and lagoons.
Eastern Curlews breed in the northern hemisphere on swampy moors and boggy marshes.

The Far Eastern Curlew Satellite Tracking Project
The Far Eastern Curlew Satellite Project was initiated after discussions held at the 8th Conference of the Japan-Australia Migratory Bird Protection Agreement held in Queensland, Australia, in 1995.
The Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) is a migratory shorebird which generally inhabits sea and lake shore mud flats, deltas and similar areas, where it forages for crabs and other crustaceans, clam worms and other annelids, molluscs, insects and whatever else it can dig out of the mud with its long, downward-turned bill.
The purpose of the survey is to gather basic data to open the way for the establishment of a structure of international cooperative protection for the curlew and its wetland habitat.

Far Eastern Curlews begin to reach Australia by the end of July: a mail from Clive Minton of the Australasian Waders Study Group in Aug 2002 said that he'd already "started to get sightings from China and Japan, indicating that southward migration is well in train.
The first Curlew reached here on the 20th July, numbers doubled by the end of July, and doubled again by the 10th of August".
