Western Hemisphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The terminology is meant to serve as an analogy with the natural geographic division of the world into a Northern and Southern Hemisphere.
This would mean that parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia belong in the Western Hemisphere.) Neither is there a way to determine which of two hemispheres (wherever one draws the line between them) is the "western" one, since "western" is a relative direction.
The area commonly called Western Hemisphere is western only relative to an observer in Europe or Africa, and so the term is considered eurocentric.

Eastern Hemisphere -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Eastern Hemisphere is a phrase generally used in a political rather than geographic sense, as a synonym for " (The regions of the world that were known to Europeans before the discovery of the Americas) Old World" intended to avoid the perceived (Belief in the preeminence of Europe and the Europeans) eurocentrism of that phrase.
Using it for demarcation, the Eastern Hemisphere would cover most of Europe, plus Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
However, this puts portions of Western Europe in both hemispheres, diluting the usefulness for cartography as well as for political metaphor.

Earth Observatory Newsroom: Blue Marble Next Generation
In 2000, NASA data visualizers compiled an image of the western hemisphere using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration including GOES-8 imagery, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer, and NASA’s Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor.
These monthly images reveal seasonal changes to the land surface: the green-up and dying-back of vegetation in temperate regions such as North America and Europe, dry and wet seasons in the tropics, and advancing and retreating Northern Hemisphere snow cover.
From a computer processing standpoint, the major improvement is the development of a new technique for allowing the computer to automatically recognize and remove cloud-contaminated or otherwise bad data—a process that was previously done manually.
