The eastern half of Lake Turkana (Lake Rudolf renamed) is within the province; as is the Chalbi Desert and Mount Kenya.

In addition to the initial cases confirmed in the North Eastern Province of Kenya and Gedo, Hiran, and Lower Shabeelle provinces of Somalia, surveillance identified cases from the Central (1 case), Eastern (9 cases), and Rift Valley (12 cases) provinces of Kenya (Figure 2).
On the basis of antibody prevalence data and the assumption that all persons living in the North Eastern Province of Kenya and southern Somalia were a risk for infection, the total number of human infections in the region is estimated to be 89,000.
This is consistent with reports of confirmed cases from at least four Kenyan provinces (North Eastern, Eastern, Central, and Rift Valley), southern Somalia, and northern United Republic of Tanzania.

Active surveillance conducted by WHO, the Kenya Ministry of Health, and international relief organizations during December 22-28 in 18 villages (population: 200,000) in Garissa district, North Eastern province, Kenya, identified 170 deaths resulting from a "bleeding disease." Severe flooding and large distances between settlements complicated case ascertainment and subsequent evaluation.
In addition to the confirmed RVF cases in the North Eastern province and the Gedo, Hiran, and Lower Shabeelle provinces of Somalia, acute confirmed RVF cases were identified in the Central (one case), Eastern (nine cases), and Rift Valley (12 cases) provinces of Kenya (Figure_2).
Editorial Note: In Kenya in 1930, RVF virus was first isolated and recognized as the etiologic agent for a zoonotic disease associated with substantial perinatal mortality and abortions in livestock (1).

 Rift Valley Fever Outbreak Widespread in Kenya
The outbreak of Rift Valley fever, which had previously been reported in the North-eastern Province of Kenya, appears to be present in other parts of the country, according to WHO experts now in Kenya.
Elements of the plan include case-based, clinical surveillance in hospitals throughout Kenya to detect new cases and investigate the increased spread of the disease, and a systematic sampling and testing of specimens taken from humans and animals which have contracted the disease.
For the moment, information on the outbreak from northeastern Kenya is still sparse and WHO and its partners will be working in coming weeks to increase surveillance of and testing for Rift Valley fever and other diseases potentially associated with this outbreak.

Preliminary epidemiological studies have shown all areas in Kenya where the RVF infections have occurred in previous years and have recently had heavy rainfall are most likely to have virus ciruclating in both animals and humans.
These deaths are concentrated in Kenya's Northeastern Province and in southern Somalia, where after a critical review of the data from Somalia, a revised count indicates that 80 deaths are suspected to be due to haemorrhagic fever.
