I have an eastern redbud that has had very little top growth since I planted it 2 years ago but keeps sending up lots of suckers from the roots.
I have another eastern redbud planted about 15 feet away that has lots of healthy top growth and no suckers from the base.
My experience with Redbud trees is they don't like to be transplanted, even when young, much less when they are several feet tall; they can die after several years of healthy growth for no reason at all; and sometimes after they die, they return from the roots the next spring.
