The North Eastern Region was one of three that inherited the London and North Eastern's modern flat-roofed design of 1933.
The North Eastern Region reverted to the use of gabled roofs for new mechanical boxes opened between 1957 and 1967.
The North Eastern Region was disbanded and became part of the Eastern Region in 1967.

British Railways (BR), later rebranded as British Rail, ran the British railway system from the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' British railway companies in 1948 until its privatisation in stages between 1994 and 1997.
British Railways came into existence on 1 January 1948 with the merger of the Big Four, under the control of the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission (BTC).
Also during this time, yellow warning panels, characteristic of British railways, were added to the front of diesel and electric locomotives and multiple units in order to increase the safety of track workers.

The London and North Eastern Railway or LNER was the second-largest of the "Big Four" railway companies created by the Railways Act 1921 in Britain.
It formed the new British Railways' Eastern Region, North Eastern Region and partially the Scottish Region.
The public face of a railway system was and is in large part the locomotives and rolling stock in service upon it, and therefore the personalities of the Chief Mechanical Engineers of the LNER impressed their distinctive visions upon the railway.

The Great Eastern Railway began as the Eastern Counties Railway, a motley collection of many small railways in East Anglia, of which the Northern and Eastern was the most important, for it extended the scope of the railway towards Cambridge.
The North British Railway began in 1844 principally to connect Berwick and Edinburgh, but upon its completion in 1846 a railway line connected Edinburgh and London ("via Rugby, Leicester, Sheffield and York"), and service began between the two capitols in 1850.
In 1852 the North British reached to Glasgow, in 1862 Fifeshire, Perth and Dundee, and in 1865 Carlisle.

Apart from that, the eastern region continued the LNER's conservative approach to mechanical signalling and few technological strides were made.
The Eastern Region developed the LNER architecture into the neat design seen here, which was used between 1955 and 1959.

The makers plate is missing from the box lid but because of this, the LSWR stamping is clearly visible, indeed the railway may well have removed the makers plate to stamp this.

Note The Midland Hotel Morecambe was acquired by the Midland Railway in 1871 and sold by BR in 1952.
The CSAR was the former Imperial Military Railway from the Boer War and was formed in 1902 to include all the railways in the Orange Free State and the Transvaal.

Based on a Midland Railway design, these popular engines were usually found hauling long trains of mineral wagons and were known to railway enthusiasts as “Duck Sixes”.
Paston and Knapton Halt was a Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Railway station, between Mundesley-on-Sea and North Walsham.
The Pontypridd Caerphilly and Newtown Railway was amalgamated with the Alexandra Newport Docks Railway.

 CATALOGUE OF LOTS 1 TO 550
Purchased from its War Department storage at Newbury Racecourse by the Southern Railway in November 1947 for £2,300, it was sent to Southampton Docks becoming SR 61.
The SMJ was formed by amalgamation of the East and West Junction Railway; Evesham Redditch and Stratford-on-Avon Junction Railway; and Stratford-on-Avon, Towcester and Midland Junction Railway in 1909.
Latterly a Leicester Midland, Rowsley and Patricroft locomotive, it was withdrawn in April 1968 from the latter.

Some railway companies designed their own signal boxes, whilst others used signalling contractor's architecture.
My interest in railway signalling started in the 1960's when, as a short-trousered trainspotter, I was asked into Oakleigh Park signal box by the signalman.

In the heyday of steam on British Railways, it was possible to see locomotives from all over the nationalised network passing through Gloucestershire.
The codes of Eastern Region locomotive depots - such as Plaistow - that had belonged to the London Midland and Scottish Railway before 1948 are shown in (round brackets).
As a British Railways locomotive it would have carried the number 60007 and been allocated to depot 34A.

Formed in 1956 from the Eastern Region and with its headquarters at York, the North Eastern Region was one of outstanding contrasts.
It ranged from the frimy textile towns of the West Riding to the shipbuilding and coal mining regions of County Durham and Northumberland, to the sylvan scenery of the Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors or Coast.

In July 1860, the newly formed Sudbury and Clare Railway Company revived the 1847 Act and by a new Act of July 1860 they were empowered to build a line from Sudbury to Clare via Melford.
In April 1965, the British Railways Board gave notice of their intention to close the line from Marks Tey to Cambridge with total closure planned for 31.12.1966.
The aim of the Cambridge to Colchester Railway Development Company is to reopen the line in two stages.

Class 53 was composed of a single locomotive D1200 "Falcon" which was purchased after extensive tests on BR.

It remained in the use of the GNR/LNER directors, then British Railways Eastern Region General Manager until 1969, when it was sold complete from Hornsey Carriage Sheds for the princely sum of £500.
The celebration of the saloon's 100th anniversary, which fell in 1997, included running of the coach with the GNR Saddle Tank belonging to the National Railway Museum.
In 2000 it became famous around the world as the "Old Gentleman's Coach" in the TV film of "The Railway Children".
