Rift Valley fever is a virus that is widespread in Africa.
Although the diagnosis of Rift Valley fever has been confirmed by laboratory tests in some of the blood samples, it may not be the cause of all of the deaths.
Because the population affected is generally exposed to a wide variety of infectious diseases, other severe diseases that normally occur in the area, such as shigellosis, yellow fever, dengue, and malaria, may partially explain the large number of deaths in the region.
