  Thailand, Land of Contrasts
Thailand is commonly divided into four regions: the north, the northeast, the central region, and the south.
Thailand's northeast consists mostly of the Khorat Plateau (a plateau is a fairly flat, elevated expanse of land; Khorat is an important city after which the plateau is named.) This region is arid and its soil is not very fertile.
Thailand's most important natural resources, though, cannot be valued or marketed: her industrious people and her fertile soil.

Thailand’s first Prime Minister Pridi Banomyong, was ousted by the Thai military way back in the late thirties for advocating an allegedly ‘communist’ economic policy of land reforms and state planning.
Thailand did have a communist party, like many other countries in the region, but it turned into a low key armed insurgency only in the early fifties after being banned and prevented from functioning openly.
In other words Thailand is faced with the amazing situation where there seem to be leftists of different shades all over the place but not a single left party to give electoral expression to their ideas and aims.

Alternative agriculture in Thailand and Japan
In Thailand this is partly explained by the fact that agro-forestry (an important component of permaculture agriculture), has, until recently, not been favored by small holder Thai farmers.
One obstacle to the growth of organic farming in Thailand is the lack of a recognized national certification scheme, this is not the case in Japan where in 1993 the Japan Association Standard, administered by the Ministry of Agriculture, forestry and Fisheries, was introduced to classify organic produce into six different categories.
Although the present status of alternative agriculture in Thailand and Japan is small, in terms of the number of participating farmers, it is true to say that there has been an exponential growth in the number of farmers, consumers, NGOs, multilateral organizations and governments who are expressing concerns over the failure of conventional agriculture.

Description In late 1985, the Thailand Tantalum Industry Corporation began building a refinery to produce tantalum, a valuable metal by-product of tin-processing that is used in aerospace, computer, and nuclear components, in a residential neighborhood on the island of Phuket.
Phuket residents had long been subjected to the environmental degradation caused by a thriving local tin industry, watching helplessly as their livelihood, the sea, itself, was ruined by zealous corporate mining tactics.
Although it is difficult to hazard a guess, it seems that sink problems of pollution and waste will have the greatest impact on the sea, damaging the livelihoods of native fisherman.

CTTC - The Impressed Tortoise, Manouria impressa by William Espenshade and James Buskirk
He concurs with McMorris and Burns (1975) in declaring the habitat to be "fairly dry and generally away from the water bodies, so this tortoise relies instead on dew or rain-drenched vegetation." The same author cites the altitude parameters as 700-2,000 meters, both considerably higher than those figures as reported in feet by Wirot (1979).
However, this tortoise had seemed heat-stressed during a failure of the air conditioning unit in the room in which it was housed, burying itself beneath the water dish for the duration of the 32°C heat wave and has since died when there was a prolonged interruption in air conditioning.
Even protected habitats in Thailand may be subject to poaching, and the rapidity of habitat destruction and impact of war elsewhere in the region lend little optimism for the long-term survival of this delicate species.
