Satpura Range - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Godavari River and its tributaries drain the Deccan plateau, which lies south of the central and eastern portions of the range, and the Mahanadi River drains the easternmost portion of the range.
The eastern portion of the range receives more rainfall than the western portion, and the eastern range, together with the Eastern Ghats, constitute the Eastern highlands moist deciduous forests ecoregion.
The seasonally dry western portion of the range, together with the Narmada valley and the western Vindhya Range, are within the Narmada valley dry deciduous forests ecoregion.

 The South Asian scenario
Forest resources all over the world are deteriorating as a result of the material progress at the cost of ecology —the developing countries of South Asia are also on the same boat.
Forest is the most valuable renewable resource of the 'biodiversity' as the plants basically support the survival of each and every member of the biome.
The forests are of three main types : (a) mangrove forests in the coastal delta, (b) hill forests in the interior, (c) a smaller area of inland sal (Shorea robusta) forest.

The low Eastern Ghats Mountains along the peninsula's eastern coast are not as effective in trapping the moisture from the monsoon winds that sweep in from the Bay of Bengal.
The Eastern Ghats have biogeographic affinities with the eastern Himalayas and with the Western Ghats.
The forests growing on the lateritic and crystalline rock substrates along the hills are dominated by Shorea robusta in association with Syzygium cumini, Dendrocalamus strictus, Phoenix acaulis, and Themeda quadrivalvis (Champion and Seth 1968).

 The South Asian Scenario
The broad-leaved forests are a mix of mainly chestnuts, alders and chilaune (Schima wallichii).
The forests of the country are of various types such as (a) littoral and swamp forests, (b) tropical dry deciduous forests, (c) tropical thorn forests, (d) sub-tropical broad-leaved evergreen forests, (e) sub-tropical pine forests, Himalayan moist temperate forests, (f) Himalayan dry temperate forests, (g) sub-alpine forests and (h) alpine scrub.
Over the last century much of the forest resources have been converted into some other sorts of landuse such as plantation crops and other forms of agriculture, human settlements, shifting cultivation etc. The remaining part is also under a great pressure as the demand for the forest products is increasing with the population increase.

Biodiversity Hotspots - Guinean Forests of West Africa - Overview
Logging, mining, hunting and human population growth are placing extreme stress on the forests, however, threatening species such as the Jentink’s duiker, pygmy hippopotamus, and scattered populations of western chimpanzees.
The Guinean Forests of West Africa hotspot encompasses all of the lowland forests of political West Africa, stretching from Guinea and Sierra Leone eastward to the Sanaga River in Cameroon.
The Guinean forests consist of a range of distinct vegetation zones varying from moist forests along the coast, freshwater swamp forests (for example, around the Niger Delta), semi-deciduous forests inland with prolonged dry seasons.

National Forests in eastern Oregon and Washington are threatened by logging, road building, mining, grazing, off-road vehicle abuse, and the effects of a century of fire suppression.
Old growth forests are considered rare across the Basin due to extensive logging and road building, beginning with the development of the railroad land grants and other pioneer-era government policies in the late 1800’s.

Deciduous needleaf forest was the least abundant forest type, and this occurred only in the eastern extremity of Kazakhstan (Map 1, Table 2).
Some of these forest variants may indeed be truly rare and unprotected types, others are clearly fragments of forest at the end of their ranges, as for example certain types of dry forest should not normally occur in moist ecological zones, or vice versa.

Sambirano forest is found in the northwestern part of the island and serves as transition between the eastern moist forests and the western dry forests.
Within the dry deciduous forests of Madagascar you can find the island's limestone pinnacle formations known locally as "tsingy." Because limestone is highly porous, these regions often wave well-developed caves and underground rivers.
Dry deciduous forests in western Madagascar have been burned and replaced with scrub vegetation that is neither attractive nor supports much animal life.

The Private Forest Nationalisation Act 1957 was primarily concerned with bringing an end to indiscriminate felling of trees in the Terai forests and the unregulated trade of timber with a view to check the further degradation of forests in the country.
Forests were cleared for cultivation and new settlements and, during that period, heavy deforestation occurred.

Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are found in a belt around the equator and in the humid subtropics, and are characterized by warm, humid climates with high year-round rainfall.
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are common in several terrestrial ecozones, including parts of the Afrotropic (equatorial Africa), Indomalaya (parts of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia), the Neotropic (northern South America and Central America), Australasia (eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and northern Australia), and Oceania (the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean).

Where altitude increases along the borders of equatorial rainforests, the vegetation is replaced by montane forests, as in the highlands of New Guinea, the Gotel Mountains of Cameroon, and in the Ruwenzori mass of Central Africa.
Chemical weathering of rock and soil in the equatorial forests is intense, and in rainforests weathering produces soil mantles up to 100 m (330 feet) deep.
Rain falling on the forests drips down from the leaves and trickles down tree trunks to the ground, although a great deal of water is lost to leaf transpiration.
