My immediate predecessor, David Chidgey, whose contribution to the House and service to his constituents is soon to be recognised in ennoblement and transfer to another place, also retained his by-election win at the 1997 election with a slender majority and then won substantially more comfortably in 2001.
Eastleigh constituency is a varied part of Hampshire.
On the plus side, Eastleigh has continued to grow as a logistic centre, thanks in part to its ideal position near the junction of the M3 and M27, and with Southampton airport, which is really Eastleigh airport.

Eastleigh is a railway town in Hampshire, England, and the main town in the Eastleigh borough.
Eastleigh borough stretches from Netley on the banks of Southampton Water, the historic river villages of Hamble-le-Rice, Bursledon and Botley, the developing areas of Hedge End, West End, Hampshire, Fair Oak and Bishopstoke and the green residential belt of Chandler's Ford.
Eastleigh has a tradition of close contests, and Huhne narrowly beat the Conservative candidate Conor Burns with the second lowest swing against the Liberal Democrats of any seat with a retiring MP (2.6%).

He finished second to Menzies Campbell in the 2006 election for the leadership of the Liberal Democrats and is the party's Shadow Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs in the House of Commons.
He was first elected to represent Eastleigh at the general election on 5 May 2005, a constituency within the area for which he was previously the Member of the European Parliament.
The previous MP for the constituency, David Chidgey, was also a Liberal Democrat who won his seat in what was historically a Conservative area in a by-election in 1994 following the accidental death of Stephen Milligan.

Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne today pressed the Government minister in charge of National Health Service dentists to visit Eastleigh to see the difficulties experienced by people in registering for NHS treatment.
Mr Huhne was speaking in the debate in the House of Commons on NHS dentistry initiated by the Liberal Democrats, and pointed out that nearly half of all people in the Eastleigh constituency are not registered with an NHS dentists.
Mr Huhne asked whether the Government was taking into account local factors such as higher NHS costs, and pointed to the extreme problems revealed by a recent survey undertaken by the Southern Daily Echo that showed no dentists in the area prepared to take NHS patients.
