A quick scan of the dates carved in many of the brick buildings in Eastport's business district - including the bank building that French is currently restoring as the headquarters for the Tides Institute - shows most of the historic buildings currently standing were built in 1887.
The only way Eastport is going to make it, according to French, is by creating alliances, and finding ways to create a larger, regional mix.
The last sardine factory in Eastport closed in 1982, and while French says it's been 20 years since the smell of sardines was in the air at Eastport, there are other things floating in the air these days, but they need to be nurtured.
