Eastry School was built at which time a small bell by Rufford is thought to have been hung (although there was an earlier school in 1840).
The tenor went to Eastry, although a mistake was made and at the time this was believed to be the 2nd.
The fact that Eastry was actually in possession of the Hawkhurst tenor rather than the 2nd as previously thought was discovered when the tuning figures were measured: it was the same note as the current treble.

 Eastry Kent: Village near Sandwich
Eastry has a place in history for Egbert, King of Kent, had a palace there in A.D. 664, probably on the site now occupied by Eastry Court, and it was there that two young Princes, Ethelbert and Ethelred, cousins of the King, were treacherously slain and buried in the King's Hall.
After the consolidation of the several independent kingships of Kent into one monarchy, in A.D. 827, Eastry gradually ceased to be a royal residence, and in A.D. 979 the reigning sovereign bestowed the palace and manor upon the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury.
Thomas Becket was often at Eastry and in 1164 lay in hiding at the Court for eight days waiting to escape in a fishing boat from Sandwich to France; tradition has it that in this house there is a small secret chamber communicating with the parish church.

Stacey GRIMALDI was born Octr 18th 1790 in the parish of St James London, and died March 28th 1863 at Hernden House, Eastry, leaving a widow, their six sons and three daughters.To the beloved and honoured memory of Stacey Grimaldi, Esq.
She was the daughter of Joshua and Susan PARAMOR of Eastry in East Kent.

On arrival at the site the FLO was able to identify the copper alloy object as a 6 th century Anglo-Saxon 'shield-on-tongue' buckle; the sword was also clearly of Anglo-Saxon date.
All the finds and contents of the burial were kindly donated by Mr and Mrs Rye to Dover Museum, and it is now hoped that funds can be found to facilitate the conservation and analysis of these.
The location of the discovery is very interesting; we now have burials of 6 th century date within the village of Eastry and lying immediately to either side of the Roman road which bisects the village.

One of the treasures of Eastry is a brass Standard Winchester bushel measure, inscribed 'Hundred of Cornillo, 1792' which was owned by the former Eastry rural district council for many years and was given to St Mary's Church in 1974.
The palace is generally supposed to have stood where Georgian Eastry Court now is, and it was the setting for one of Kent's oldest legends.
Perhaps he fell into one of the Eastry caves - an elaborate, multi-storey labyrinth, the access to which is privately owned.

Eastry was part of a Gilbert Union formed under Gilbert's Act of 1782 which provided a variety of powers including the operation of a workhouse for the elderly, infirm and children.
A new Eastry Union workhouse was erected in 1835-6 to the west of the existing workhouse on Mill Lane.
The former workhouse later became Eastry Hospital which became a centre for the care of those with learning disabilities.
