Eaters of the Dead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eaters of the Dead is a 1976 novel by Michael Crichton.
Crichton drew upon ambassador Ibn Fadlan's account of his journeys among the early Russians, and posits the origin of the Beowulf epic as a conflict between Vikings and a small relict Neanderthal population.
Thus Eaters is a compilation of Ibn Fadlan's real manuscripts (paraphrased and modified by Crichton presumably), with a newly "discovered" fictional manuscript concerning the origins of the Beowulf legend inserted admists the real events.

Eaters of the Dead takes elements of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf and the Arab Ibn Fadlan's account of his journeys among the Rus, and works them into a thriller.
The historical detail is handled reasonably well, the story is fast-paced and gripping, and the contrast between the Arab/Islamic and Viking cultures is effectively exploited.
The movie based on Eaters of the Dead is called The 13th Warrior.

The frame story is adapted from the tenth-century Arabic writings of Ibn Faḑlān, while the central sequence of events is an adaptation of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf.
Originally titled Eaters of the Dead, the film went through several reedits after test audiences did not react well to the initial cut.

However, a story from a book by Michael Crichton (the 1976 novel Eaters of the Dead), director John McTiernan (Die Hard, The Thomas Crown Affair), and superstar Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro, and director of the upcoming Crazy in Alabama) is not enough to save this movie.
Eaters of the Dead is Crichton's telling of the story of Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan, an Iraqi poet who becomes involved with a group of Vikings to save their kingdom from a mysterious enemy.

 THE 13TH WARRIOR movie review
Back in 1992 when I first read EATERS OF THE DEAD, I was amazed that a book of so few pages could be so grandly epic in scope.
I've no doubt that there where times when writing EATERS OF THE DEAD that Crichton wasn't feeling too masterful, as the writing has the sparse simplicity of a labor of love.
I never thought this would be made into a movie, Chricton writes in a manner easily adapted to screenwriting, and EATER'S OF THE DEAD was more in keepng with a documentary travelogue.

Anyway, this article argues that Snape is probably not the Death Eater referred to as "having left me forever" in Voldemort's speech (above), the reason being that he was probably present in the ring of returning Death Eaters.
Best argument against "Snape could be the most faithful servant" is that that wouldn't leave a position open for Crouch, Jr., who's a Death Eater that's not present in the circle, and thus must be among the six missing ones.
As I understood it, nobody but the Death Eaters knows about the Mark on the arm of all of Voldemort's supporters (if it was general knowledge, then the "good guys" would have had it a lot easier at the trials, for example).
