  Eating clubs
Eating clubs came into being in the nineteenth century as a consequence of the College's inability to provide adequate dining facilities for its growing student population.
With the banning of Greek-letter fraternities in 1855, the field was left open for the eating clubs to become the dominant social influence among undergraduates.
Wilson's alternative to the eating clubs was continued in the Quad Plan he proposed to the trustees in 1907 (Residential, Dining and Social Facilities).

Toyon's men were all 'Club members, and the social and intellectual life of the dorm was next door in the dining rooms and lounges of the 'Clubs.
A major change that was necessary to the 'Clubs survival was the consolidation and merging of the financial resources of all the Eating Clubs in 1966.
To ensure the solvency of the remaining clubs, a reorganization of the Eating Clubs was required.

Princeton eating clubs? - College Discussion
More specifically, eating clubs are also social organizations in which upperclassmen either sign-in to or bicker (which is a selection process) to become a member of the eating club.
Eating clubs are a logical extension of the same concept.
I concede that eating clubs are probably most appropriate for people who by their personality are “joiners” and that not everybody is one.

While the club members are upperclassmen, the social outlets they provide are often made available to both the underclassmen and non-club members of the campus undergraduate community.
The first official eating club at Princeton, Ivy Inn, was formed in 1879 when a group of students rented a building and hired staff to prepare their meals on a regular basis.
Interested students usually join one of the eating clubs at the midpoint of sophomore year, though this membership appears more like a social membership as sophomores continue to eat within the residential college system.

 Eating clubs
The majority of upperclassmen at Princeton University take their meals in one of eleven eating clubs, which are an amalgamation of dining halls and Greek-letter fraternities.
Six clubs, namely University Cottage Club[?], Cap and Gown Club[?], The Ivy Club[?], Tiger Inn[?], Princeton Tower Club[?], and most recently, Campus Club[?] are selective, and choose their members through a process called "bicker[?]".
All of the clubs have been coeducational since 1991, which is the consequence of a lawsuit filed by Sally Frank[?] against Ivy, Cottage, and Tiger Inn in 1979.

The rise of the eating clubs as the primary social and culinary outlet of the upperclasses in the twentieth century at Princeton University is due to a variety of factors.
By 1917, their were 17 clubs with the oldest ones still offering the most social prestige to members, with 15% to 20% of the sophomore class not being elected to any club.
The 100% admittance to clubs lasted through the early 1960s with the exception of 1958 where 23 men were refused admittance to a club of their choice amid charges of discrimination.

Reforming the eating clubs,By John Kimble '02,Monday, Februrary 8, 1999
Instead of bickering or signing into a club, students interested would pay an eating club fee, perhaps the average cost of all the clubs, at the beginning of their junior and senior years, which could give them access to any eating club for any meal.
Clubs would also probably have to limit the number of people allowed to use their facilities for each meal to prevent everyone from trying to eat in one or two clubs, but they would still be encouraged to do more than simply cater to a small group of students.
The makeup of the clubs at any given meal would change as people experimented with new clubs, but people would still gravitate to places where they could expect to find their friends and they feel most at home.

Eating clubs (Princeton University) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Each club occupies a large mansion on Prospect Avenue, with the exception of Terrace Club, which is just around the corner on Washington Road.
Unlike fraternities and sororities, to which the clubs are sometimes compared, all of the clubs admit both male and female members, and members (with the exception of the undergraduate officers) do not live in the mansion.
If more students choose a club as their first choice than that club is able to accept as members, a random lottery is used to determine which students are accepted.

Indeed, one of the most extraordinary aspects of the entire club phenomenon is the speed at which the clubs formed and raised their own buildings.
In keeping with the times, the overall style of these early clubs was in line with the domestic architecture of the period -- informal, suggestive of the idyllic, pastoral life deemed appropriate for young gentlemen of the late 19th century.
The second period, the decade of 1900-1910, saw the clubs ascendant, and it was during this era that the clubs became firmly and forever established as Princeton institutions.

More than 75 percent of Princeton upperclassmen are members of eating clubs, and because the clubs act as dining halls and study spaces, not just social spaces, they play a much larger part in students’ daily lives.
Both eating clubs and final clubs admit students in their sophomore year, giving them a longer-term presence in students’ lives than secret societies.
Since society membership is often based less on social networks than membership in eating or final clubs, the groups of seniors who end up in a society together may not have known each other in their previous years at Yale.
