Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey was born in Idogo, the Western region of Nigeria in 1942.
Obey modernized the sound by adding the funkiness of Yoruban drumming, more Western-style guitars and drum-kits, and added multiple talking drums, where only one had been used before.
In 1966, Obey's chief juju rival, King Sunny Ade came on the scene, and they still maintain a friendly rivalry today.

Since the 1960s, Ebenezer Obey has been one of the most popular, prolific, and influential musicians in Nigeria, releasing over fifty albums, developing juju style, and conducting an informal and highly creative campaign against his competitors in the musical world.
Obey's first band, the International Brothers, was formed in 1964, and played a slow and music composed of layered guitars and Yoruban percussion sounds.
Always a cultural and religious traditionalist, Obey worked within the praise song mold, vaunting both Christianity and the various heads of state for whom he played.

The pastor introduced himself to my landlord and then told him to allow me stay, promising to return the following day and as promised he came in the morning of the next day and made a deal with the landlord that I was going to pay the money by instalments of two pounds.
Continuing, Obey who was a bachelor then, also revealed that after giving his life to Christ that day, he continued to worship at that church until one fateful day when he made a deal with God.
And of course the third and final one was the fact that he was down and almost down but God picked him up in that church and made him a star.

In the mid ’60s, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and King Sunny Ade continued the trend, gradually expanding their lineups so that by the early ’70s, they numbered upwards of 20 musicians—including whole sections of guitarists and percussionists, and relatively exotic instruments such as trap drums, synthesizers, and pedal steel.
A friendly competition between Obey’s International Brothers (later called the International Reformers) and Ade’s African Beats led to increasingly complex and longer songs—some running well over 30 minutes.
Juju came to dominate the Nigerian music scene throughout the ’70s and early ’80s, at which time Ade effectively spearheaded the worldwide Afro-pop phenomenon by touring internationally.
