n early 1944 a new commandant was appointed in Ebensee, Obersturmfûhrer Otto Riemer.
The 25 Ebensee barracks were designed to hold 100 prisoners each.

After the liberation of the Ebensee concentration camp on May 6, 1945, the area was converted into a DP camp.
Ebensee consisted of four separate barracks where roughly 500 Jews were interspersed amidst a majority of Polish DPs.
As a result of Judah Nadich’s (General Eisenhower’s first advisor on Jewish affairs in Europe) investigation of the Jewish DP situation in Ebensee, the Jews were moved to hotels in Bad Gastein.

 Establishment of the Concentration Camp in Ebensee
In July 1944 most of the prisoners who arrived in the concentration camp of Ebensee were Soviet P.O.W.s; (2) in the fall of 1944 mostly Polish prisoners arrived in the concentration camp of Ebensee who came from the concentration camp in Auschwitz.
One of the worst evacuation transports arrived in the concentration camp of Ebensee on March 3rd, 1945: it consisted of 2.059 Jewish prisoners from the concentration camp in Wolfsberg which was a sub-camp of Gross-Rosen.
By the middle of April the evacuation transports from the sub-camps of Mauthausen arrived at the concentration camp in Ebensee.

 Ebensee - subcamp of Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria
Evelyn le Chene, the historian of Mauthausen, wrote that, as the American armies approached Ebensee, all thirty thousand prisoners in the camp were ordered into a tunnel packed with explosives.
According to Martin Gilbert, the last death marches of the war began on May 1, 1945 as the American Army approached; prisoners from the main camp at Mauthausen and the sub-camps at Gusen and St. Valentin were marched to Gunskirchen and Ebensee.
In the photograph above, the prisoners all have shaved heads, a procedure which was used in all the Nazi concentration camps in an effort to control the lice which spreads typhus.

The prisoners were cold also because of their malnutrition, and the wet and cold climate of the Ebensee region caused numerous illnesses.
In addition to having to do heavy work, they did not only have to march a long distance in order to get to their working sites and then had to cover the same distance going back, but they also had far less opportunities to obtain additional food.
The construction of the tunnels in Ebensee was done by companies, most of which still are active today.

The Ebensee works eventually were used for petroleum refining and the manufacture of motor parts for tanks and trucks, by the Steyr-Daimler-Puch works of Linz and the Nibelungenwerk factory of St.
Two separate works were located in the Ebensee hills -- Anlage A was a large system closer to the lake and town, and Anlage B was a smaller system adjacent to the concentration camp, just to the southwest.
The Ebensee camp, adjacent to the Anlage B tunnels, has all but disappeared today, save for the main gate and a memorial on the site.

 Ebensee - Sub-camp of Mauthausen Concentration Camp
One of the survivors of Ebensee, according to Martin Gilbert's book about the Holocaust, was Dr. Miklos Nyiszli, a prisoner who worked as a medical doctor in the death camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
In the last months of the war, the Ebensee camp was seriously over-crowded with these exhausted prisoners, many of whom had just arrived in the weeks prior to the liberation.
These camps had been transformed into holding camps for the remnant of a destroyed people, men and women whose labor was still of some last-minute utility for a dying Reich, or whose emaciated bodies were to be left to languish in agony in one final camp.

Among the living dead of the 35,000 skeletal prisoners was Morris Hollander, a Slovakian Jew who had survived Auschwitz and a force 300-mile winter march to Ebensee in Austria, where he spent the last months of the war digging rocks.
The reunion was sparked by the publication of A Surgeon in Combat, McDermott’s memoir of his war experiences with a mobile surgical unit in Europe.

I was lucky enough to be contacted by Robb, a birder based in Ebensee, a town in the Austrian Alps, who was extremely helpful and generous in assisting my companion and me on the weekend in the Alps I subsequently booked.
In fact, we had a great time, all got on well and Robb invited us back for the Easter period, to stay with him and his family and to look for the rest of the local specialities that had eluded us on the first visit.
This was some task, as during the 48 hours we had in and around Ebensee on the first trip, we had only managed to connect with alpine chough, whilst admiring the breathtaking scenery and freezing in the sub-zero temperatures.

From Rindbach near Ebensee walk along the Forststrasse through the Rindbach valley as far as the mouth of the Karberalpe, to the Grassltropfsteinhöhle hut (1,200m asl), on the east slope of the Gasslkogl.
A cave visit takes a whole day, as it is necessary to walk to the cave.
It runs only on saturdays, starts at Ebensee with a stop at Rindbach and it is necessary to prebook.

We all know there isn't one at the castle, but the shot showing the low station appears to be in a narrow valley, which is nothing like the wide open valley at Werfen.
Ever since seeing the film I've been to Werfen and Ebensee to try and find some of the locations however I always had a problem with the town scenes (Zum Wilden Hirsch) as neither in Werfen nor Ebensee could I see where this was set.
The cablecar is renewed in the mid-eighties but when you want to see the gondola that was used in the movie, go to gasthof edelweiss at the feuerkogel in Ebensee.

JoWooD is apparently not doing too well financially, as today it was revealed to us that the Austrian publisher is closing down two of its development studios.
One of our Jowood sources confirmed that earlier this week, it was decided that Transport Giant house Studio Ebensee and Söldner's Wings Simulations will be shutting down in the next few months.
Both studios will finish up current projects and then will have a small core team still in place for future patch releases and customer support.
