  Franconia - LoveToKnow 1911
The word Franconia, first used in a Latin charter of 10J3, was applied like the words France, Francia and Franken, to a portion of the land occupied by the Franks.
The most influential family in Rhenish Franconia was that of the Salians, the head of which early in the 10th century was Conrad the Red, duke of Lorraine, and son-in-law of Otto the Great.
The lands formerly comprised in the duchy of Franconia are now divided between the kingdoms of Bavaria and Wurttemberg, the grandduchies of Baden and Hesse, and the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau.

Eberhard III of Franconia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On his deathbed, in December 918, King Conrad persuaded Eberhard to forego any ambition for the German crown and to urge the Electors of the Empire to choose Henry the Fowler, duke of Saxony, as his successor at the Reichstag, which was held in May 919 in Fritzlar.
Enfuriated, Eberhard joined Otto's opponents, raising a rebellion in 938 with Otto's halfbrother Thankmar and the new duke of Bavaria, Eberhard (son of Arnulf of Bavaria).
Eberhard of Franconia was killed in the battle, and his duchy became a direct Imperial possession from 939 to 1024.

Eberhard increased the territory of the diocese, but, being a partisan of Frederick I, he was for a time under sentence of excommunication.

With Henry preferring to allow the five original stem duchies that made up the Holy Roman Empire (Franconia, Swabia, Bavaria, Saxony, and later Lorraine) to rule rather independently, Eberhard was able to exercise power in Franconia almost as an independent ruler.
Opposing Henry's son, King Otto I in 938, Eberhard was killed in 939 at the Battle of Andernach, and his duchy became a direct Imperial possession from 939 to 1024.

Conrad's choice was conveyed by duke Eberhard III of Franconia, Conrad's bother and successor, to the assembled Franconian and Saxon nobles at the Reichstag of Fritzlar in 919, which duly elected Henry to be king.
