		EBONY TEARS: Evil as Hell (Black Sun) L!L!L!L! It's hard to imagine a band called Ebony Tears being responsible for the groove thrash/death chaos that explodes across this album, but it's true.
		I seem to recall Ebony Tears existing as a specialised melodic death metal unit several years back, but Evil as Hell sees them moving into a different direction, a combination of groove metal Pantera style, Entombed-like death rock and post-Gothenburg melody.
		Johnny Wranning's vocals carry a hardcore edge without becoming annoying and while Ebony Tears are drawing from a well-used pool they don't become tedious by trying to be too clever for their own good or recording six songs too many to push the CD past the one-hour mark.

		Named after the Testament song, Dog Faced Gods was originally an offshoot of the Swedish band Ebony Tears, the band formed after the members realizing that new songs intended for a new ET albums didn't fit the ET style.
		Unlike the melodic folky death of early Ebony Tears, Random Chaos Theory In Action is a more intense, Meshuggah-ish death/thrash mixture, with vocals slightly more hardcore in flavor.
		Instead, however, two subsequent Ebony Tears were released, with a style much closer to the current Dogs material.

		Johnny and Conny spent most of their time with their new project Dog Faced Gods "DFG" played a more technical, complicated and faster music than "Ebony Tears.
		In the autumn of 2001 Ebony Tears decided to call it a day however Johnny Wranning has gotten a new band together which will sound more in the vein of old Ebony Tears.

	CoC : Ebony Tears - A Handful of Nothing : Review
		The possibility, back in 1998, that there would be no sequel to Ebony Tears' rather unequal 1997 debut _Tortura Insomniae_ [CoC #30] (this being due to the fact that members Johnny Wranning and Conny Jonsson wanted to concentrate on their power/thrash project Dog Faced Gods) wasn't really something I was losing any sleep over.
		With _A Handful of Nothing_ however, Ebony Tears have placed the emphasis on aggressiveness and efficiency, and basically recorded a second album that, in my eyes, has the enjoyable, spicy taste of a "no more mister nice guy" kind of declaration.
		Not only will fans of their first output definitely recognise the band with this new effort of theirs, but _A Handful of Nothing_ is also quite able to appeal to metalheads who had failed to be keeled over by the cool, but nonetheless rather "tepid" music played by Ebony Tears so far.

		Though I wanted the band to pick up from where they left off on Tortura Insomniae, it seemed pretty evident even on the last release that Ebony Tears' new sound was something they were happy about.
		This album isn't bad for a run-of-the-mill thrash album, and it isn't bad to have playing in the background, but it is far from something to get excited about.
		I'm in the process of giving up on these Swedes, more because of their bad choices than because they are incapable of good music.

		Ebony Tears' evolution is an intriguing one indeed.
		The nice, melodic violin, which was pretty much a golden facade tentatively embellishing some rather tame riffing on _Tortura Insomniae_, was now only to be heard on the weird, squeaky track "Erised".
		The Swedes have obviously beaten their former violin player up with his instrument, thus getting rid of both these whimsical elements, leaving them free to concentrate on all-out, totally cathartic thrashing songwriting.
