Ebonyi State is an inland south-eastern state of Onicha, populated primarily by Oyo.
It is one of the six new states in Nigeria created in Sam Egwu; Ebonyi was created from the of old Abakaliki division of Niger and old Afikpo division of Area.
Ebonyi is called "the salt of the nation" for its huge salt deposit at the Okposi and Jigawa.

Recently, the state government in collaboration with UNICEF undertook to dig some 340 boreholes in the state, even as there are plans by the state government to construct two new water schemes to, as they say, better the lot of the people.
Ebonyi indigenes see this as testimony to the fact that the state was created to make history and that the struggle for its creation was not in vain.
Ebonyi indigenes do not lack anything people in other parts of the country have, be it social amenities or even such things as ambassadorial appointments, ministerial appointments and in all other appointments giving them a strong base to bargain in the struggle for development.

Ebonyi state was carved out of Abia and Enugu States on October 1, 1996 as one of the six newly created states by General Sani Abacha administration.
The state which is situated in the South-eastern part of the country shares boundaries with Benue to the north, Enugu to the northwest, Abia to the south-east and Cross River to the east.
Educationally, though young, the State boasts of a state University in Abakaliki, a Federal Polytechnic in Unwana, two Schools of Nursing at Afikpo, two Colleges of Agriculture at Ishiagu and Ikwo respectively and several Secondary and Primary Schools found all over the state.

Their Counsel is reportedly contemplating taking the matter to the State High Court which has the power to mitigate the stringent conditions.
