Ebu Gogo - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Ebu Gogo is a human-like creature (or race of creatures) which appears in the mythology of the people of the island of Flores, Indonesia, of similar mythological form to the leprechaun or elf.
The legends relating to the Ebu Gogo are somewhat detailed and, like Hawaii's menehunes, Scandinavia's tomtar and dwarfs, they may represent a folk memory of the island's previous inhabitants who were supplanted by the current population.
It is held by the people of Flores that the Ebu Gogo were alive at the time of the arrival of Dutch trading ships some 300 years ago, and some hold that they survived as recently as 100 years ago but are now no longer seen.

When the ebu gogo took the fibre into the cave, the villagers threw in a firebrand to set it alight: all the occupants were killed … except perhaps for one pair, who fled into the deepest forest, and whose descendants may be living there still.
It’s about the right height for the smaller ebu gogo Forth was told about – though the larger ones, at around 1.5m, were comparable in size to some of the local men, and it does not appear to have the powerful build that features in the stories.
Ebu gogo are said to have been stupid, possibly apes, incapable of true speech, and fearful of fire.

Curious, I asked my informant about the “Ebu Gogo.” He smiled, and we agreed that it was similar to the West’s “boogie monster.” However, there was one difference — he claimed that the Ebu Gogo had actually once lived just outside that very village.
What the Ebu Gogo did not know, however, was that the villagers had soaked the clothes in cooking fuel and lit a small fire in the last packet of clothes before handing it up.
The Ebu Gogo were burned alive in the cave, and that was the end of their existence outside the village.

[mythfolk] ANTHROPOLOGY TODAY article on Flores hobbits--Gregory Forth,
The fact is that the category ebu gogo and traditions concerning this creature belong to the Nage, a culturally and linguistically distinct population residing well over 100 kilometres to the east (which is a long distance on a mountainous, economically undeveloped island like Flores).
Spirits, hominoids and hobbits However much ebu gogo might recall Homo floresiensis (or vice versa), it is therefore clear that the first figure equally resembles characters that are generally considered to belong to myth and fantasy.
Also, while Roberts says ebu gogo were 'about a metre tall', most Nage describe the creatures as between one and 1.25 metres, and some claim their height did not differ significantly from that of modern Florinese (who are, however, considerably shorter than most Europeans).

John Hawks Anthropology Weblog : Stalking the wild ebu gogo
In the current issue of Anthropology Today, there is a great article by Greg Forth (University of Alberta), covering the ebu gogo legend, and the impact of the Liang Bua discoveries on the local peoples of Flores.
However much ebu gogo might recall Homo floresiensis (or vice versa), it is therefore clear that the first figure equally resembles characters that are generally considered to belong to myth and fantasy.
For Forth, the assumption that ebu gogo is "just another myth" is tantamount to assuming that "small-scale, non-Western societies are incapable of distinguishing empirical categories, the objects of ordinary intuition, from fantastic images dictated by religious tradition" (ibid.).

According to local stories it was villagers, not some natural disaster, that provided the catastrophic event that led to the Ebu Gogo’s extinction.

So the villagers brought the Ebu Gogo food, with plates and utensils, but the Ebu Gogo threw the plates and utensils in the dirt and gobbled up all of the food.

Kua and other elders said the creatures, known locally as the "Ebu Gogo" or the "Grandmother who eats everything", were last seen on the central Indonesian island of Flores around 300 years ago.
Members of the Indonesian-Australian team are standing by their initial findings, which captured the public imagination amid comparisons to the fictional hobbits of JRR Tolkien's stories, including The Lord Of The Rings.
Using the tale of the "Ebu Gogo" to bolster their case, some team members have speculated that homo florensius may have lived on Flores until much later than 12 000 years ago, possibly as recently as a couple of hundred years ago.

The discovery in 2003 on Flores of remains of a metre-tall hominid, Homo floresiensis, suggests a more literal interpretation of the Ebu Gogo stories.
It is questionable whether the folk memory of a people can record any clear or accurate details for a time on the order of 10,000 years, but a folk memory lasting a shorter time is entirely plausible.

For generations, the inhabitants of the Indonesian island of Flores, located 563 km east of Bali, told stories of a race of little people called the Ebu Gogo: hairy, human-like creatures that hid in the island's limestone caves.
Like leprechauns, the Ebu Gogo (the name roughly means "grandmother who eats everything") were assumed by anthropologists to be mythical.
That was until a team of Australian and Indonesian researchers excavating a cave on the island uncovered ancient bones that included the 18,000-year-old skeleton of a 1-m-tall female with a brain the size of a grapefruit.
