Ecchymoses are hemorrhages of the skin or mucosae which are larger than petechiae.
Purpura is often used as a general term to denote bleeding into the skin or mucosae such as ecchymoses and petechiae.
In this specimen, both petechiae and ecchymoses are seen, both of which are examples of purpura.

VIPERA. - THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PURE MATERIA MEDICA By TIMOTHY F. ALLEN, A.M., M.D.
Ecchymoses appeared in the endocardium and pericardium; the lungs were hyperæmic, the mucous membrane covered with ecchymoses, the tissue œdematous; the mucous membrane of the intestines was ecchymosed; the blood did not coagulate,
On the twelfth the ecchymoses had greatly diminished, but the œdema of the upper extremity and shoulder still continued; the hardness was remarkable.
Ecchymosed spots in the skin, which, after death, were also found in the membrane of the brain, (Infusion of a bloody serum was found in the ventricles of the brain.),

COUMADIN From: john_g1@IX.NETCOM.COM (john) I recently saw a 71 year old Chinese man with extensive ecchymoses on the arms and an extensive hx of senile pruritus.
His ecchymoses are worrisome to the referring physician who wants to know whether or not to take him off of his coumadin or decrease the dose.
If the ecchymoses do not develop into actual hematomata or bleeding, I would use other factors, such as stable hematocrit, lack of GI blood loss, acceptable Protimes, etc to reassure me further.

Typically, a patient with thrombocytopenia reports a sudden onset of petechiae and ecchymoses, from bleeding into mucous membranes or on the skin.
Painless, round and pinpoints (1 to 3 mm in diameter), petechiae usually appear and fade, and sometimes group to form ecchymoses.
Another type of blood leakage (and larger than petechiae), ecchymoses are purple, blue or yellow-green bruises that vary in size and shape.

Breast-fed infants are particularly at risk because human milk is a poor source of vitamin K. Hemorrhagic manifestations rarely occur in infants fed fortified cow's milk formula from the first day of life because this formula is an adequate source of the vitamin.
It appears to be related to a factor in breast milk that inhibits vitamin K synthesis by the infant's bacterial flora.
Manifestations of late-onset disease are evidence of intracranial hemorrhage, deep ecchymoses, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, and/or bleeding from mucous membranes, skin punctures, or surgical incisions.
