Ecclesall Bierlow was one of the six townships that made up the ancient Parish of Sheffield.
The Ecclesall Bierlow Poor Law Union, which was formed in 1837, included the Sheffield townships of Upper Hallam, Nether Hallam and Ecclesall Bierlow, and also the Derbyshire parishes of Beauchief, Totley and Norton.
The Workhouse of the Ecclesall Bierlow Union was built between 1841 and 1844 in Nether Edge (it later became part of Nether Edge Hospital).

 Ecclesall Woods to benefit from lottery grant | News | Sheffield Hallam University
A community project to document the archaeology and landscape of Ecclesall Woods, one of the region's premier ancient woodlands, has been awarded a œ5,000 National Lottery grant.
The grant has been awarded to the Friends of Ecclesall Woods, and along with funding from Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield City Council will allow specialist researchers to train local people how to document these sites, and how to care for them to ensure that this important link with the past is maintained.
Information on the project is available in the Natural History of Ecclesall Woods, and in the Peak District Journal, both available via the research website www.shu.ac.uk/sybionet or in local bookshops.

 Notes on History of Millhouses
It lay in the Manor and Parish of Ecclesall, and was in border country - lying on the Yorkshire side of the River Sheaf with Derbyshire opposite.
Millhouses was a cluster of properties around the 'Ecclesall' Corn mill until the 1870's when house building began in earnest.
This was carried out alongside other 'rural' inductries such as knife and scissor grinding in Ecclesall and nail making anywhere where a farmer could mount a die and wield a hammer.

You say Tarnish as though Ecclesall is imune from being associated with crime.........Why are you ashamed of crime in Ecclesall, you know murders have happened in Ecclesall before and crime goes on there to as much as anywhere else.
Ecclesall starts around the Wheatsheaf Pub just after Bents Green and i would say Wards brewery is closer to Sharrow.
Well, thank you at least for being in the seemingly minority of Sheffielders who understand the fact that Ecclesall is a separate area to a road named after it a few miles away.

FOR some reason I had a bit of a grump on when I called in the other day to try out Sheffield's 543 restaurant's new menu but it was turned to smiles by the main course.
Sue Hoey and Nick Currie opened the place on Ecclesall Road two years ago with the motto "simple contemporary food " on the building.
Now it's "modern British" to highlight the use of British and local ingredients wherever possible: rare breeds pork from Suffolk and Derbyshire lamb, Scottish salmon, Hartington Stilton and so on.
