St Helens lies in the heart of a motorway network with the M6 running along the east side of the town, with Junction 23 at Haydock.
St Helens' residents are known as St Helenians, Sintelleners or, in a derogatory sense by residents of nearby towns, a Woolyback.

The population of the four townships of Parr, Sutton, Eccleston and Windle, (prior to the formation of St. Helens Borough), was 7,573 in 1801, and this grew to 10,603 in 1821.
The red St. Andrew's cross, or Gerard saltire, (a cross in the shape of an x), in the two diagonally opposed quarters is that of the Gerards and the sable griffin of the Bold family occupies the other quarters.
The turnpike from St. Helens to Prescot was authorised by an Act of Parliament in 1746 and enabled coals to be transported from St. Helens via Prescot to Liverpool.

Not all the churches in the St Helens area have their own burial grounds but these are the one's that have.
Around the St Thomas's Church Westfield Street St Helens there are a few graves certainly couldn't be described a a cemetary as such.
St Mary's Blackbrook, is a R C church but I have never seen any graves there.

The town of St Helens grew up because it had readily available supplies of coal and sand for making glass.
Although the first reference to this chapel of St. Helens was found in a document of 1552 it is possible that the original structure dated back to the fourteenth century and was responsible for attracting a small settlement of farms and houses within its reach.
Helens remained a small village until the Industrial Revolution altered its nature immeasurably.

At the Liverpool Spring Assizes, held in St. George's Hall in early February 1879, the defence admitted that Carey was the man involved in the shooting but claimed that the pistol went off accidentally in a struggle.
Jonah their son who was Sergeant in the Lancashire County Constabulary shot at St. Helens in the execution of his duty aged 37.
Interred in the Cemetery at St. Helens where a monument was erected by his fellow officers." Jonah was cousin to my great grandmother.

An inland local patch, in the middle of industrialized Merseyside, with heavy disturbance from yachts, anglers and dog walkers, may not seem the ideal place for seeing birds, but nothing could be further from the truth.
At Eccleston mere, on the edge of St. Helens, I have learnt that if you are prepared to make the effort, just about any species can be found on your own doorstep.
Eccleston mere is also on the southern edge of the Lancashire mosses, the winter haunt of thousands of Pink footed Geese and skeins of variable numbers often fly over.

Police Officers and Community Support Officers in the Eccleston Neighbourhood have been listening to the views causing local residents concern.
Following a report from a local resident that the phone box was being damaged, neighbourhood officers were deployed immediately and a number of males, aged between 15 and 20 years, were seen running from the scene.
Sergeant John Murphy commented, “We are aware of the problems with a minority of youths in the area and are taking robust action against the individuals involved as well as looking at long-term plans in a bid to address the community's concerns.

As you are probably aware, this is a declining species in the UK, but still seems quite common in St Helens.
It is certainly by far the best wader habitat in St Helens that I know of.
This bird has been singing daily between 7:00am and 8:00am (while it is still dark, and even on the coldest mornings) since at least 23rd December.

Richard John Seddon was born at School Brow, Eccleston, near St Helens, Lancashire, England, on 22 June 1845.
His father was Thomas Seddon, headmaster of Eccleston grammar school, who had married Jane Lindsay, a Scot from Annan, Dumfriesshire, and the teacher at the Eccleston denominational school.
I expostulated by not learning my lesson, with the usual result that might be expected from a schoolmaster, especially when his own son was at fault.' He was removed from school at the age of 12, allegedly because he was regarded as a difficult and unpromising pupil.

 St Helens Sinfonietta
The annual Carol Concert jointly presented by the Sinfonietta and the St Helens United Reformed Church duly took place on 11th December and was enjoyed by all, even the conductor, who as usual had to work hardest of all -- though, he says, he made the audience work hard too.
Performances have included a memorable "workshop" at St Augustine's High School, a very enjoyable joint concert with the Warrington Male Voice Choir at Parr Hall, a successful fund-raising concert to which a number of talented local performers gave their services, and four orchestral concerts, conducted by Alan Free, at the St Helens United Reformed Church.
This is a distinguished composer who has lived in St Helens all his life (if we allow the border to encroach very slightly upon Prescot).
