Sega Roms Information: Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time were both re-released on the Sega CD and Game Gear, and Defender of the Future was re-released on the Sony PlayStation 2.
Ecco's song could be optionally 'upgraded' at two points in the game; one allowed it to be used in combination with a charge as a long-range weapon, and the other made singing at a shark temporarily disorient it.
Ecco fought the Asterite of the past (the young Asterite was apparently considerably less trusting than the older version) and stole one of its globes.

Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco: The Tides of Time were both re-released for the Sega Mega-CD, Master System and Game Gear, and Defender of the Future was re-released for the PlayStation 2.

A glorious free-fall world of wonder and shimmering beauty, this latest incarnation of Ecco the Dolphin's world is sure to attract children of all ages to look closer and absorb the retina-expanding universe through a magnetic curiosity primal to all under the age of eleven.
Ecco is a dolphin and very adept at turning his world upside down with just a turn of his body.
There is one dolphin who will run you through the basics of Ecco's controls, a group of dolphins who will offer a few challenges to make use of Ecco's talents (and provide practice for the player), and a large whale and her baby who offer a mission for Ecco to complete.

PlanetDreamcast: Games - Reviews - Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future
The X button is Ecco's sonar, which allows him to communicate with the other animals in his world and also brings up a small map of Ecco's current area.
The main collectables in the game are Vitalits, which increase Ecco's health bar, along with powerups which allow Ecco to swim against strong currents, knock down loose boulders, or give him a limitless air supply (normally you need to return to the ocean surface or find a bubble stream when your air supply runs low).
Ecco travels back and forth through time in his quest to restore equilibrium to Earth's future, and as such returns to certain levels in his quest as events in the past affect those in the future.

 Ecco the Dolphin - Nancy
After a few false starts, you discover that it's possible to make your dolphin (the titular Ecco, not to be confused with the tit-less Ecoco) leap out of the water, and perform a graceful flip before splashing back down beneath the waves.
Your dolphin is frozen at the apex of his leap, the screen flashes blood red, and your television shrieks like a 21-inch Zenith banshee.
Your dolphin splashes back down, only to find the happy sea creatures he shared his ocean home with only a moment ago have vanished without a trace.

Spaz: Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future is a continuation of a series that began on the Sega Genesis.
Ecco must now save not only his world, but a nightmare world where man is in control, another where evil dolphins are in command, and a universe controlled by the Foe.
Spaz: Ecco is a breeze to control, and once you learn to swoop and dive, you will have him leaping skyward just to watch him execute a flip and splash effortlessly back into the ocean.

The dolphin was one of the most unusual characters of the 16-bit era, not only because he is a marine mammal, but since his adventures were one of the few experiences that took you under the sea in the form of a 2D platform game with beautiful graphics, great sound and a novel concept.
The folks at Apaloosa are trying to bring him back in grand fashion in Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, hoping to avoid the dangerous, shallow waters of translating a 2D franchise to three dimensions and providing gameplay as deep as the ocean in which it takes place.
Ecco explores worlds both real and fantastic, with each scenario representing what the future will look like, from the bright coral reefs of Earth to the streets of Atlantis to the rusted out hulks of sunken ships.

The game keeps Ecco further and further from the surface until you are forbidden from returning there.
For one reason or another (perhaps you were too young, or it was too hard, or you were struggling to be a man at an age where dolphins were totally just for girls) it goes overlooked, and people who've never played it assume they must have, once, somewhere, like at a friend's house or something.
