  Ecdysis
Ecdysis is the molting[?] of the cuticula[?] in arthropods and related groups (Ecdysozoa).
In preparation for ecdysis the arthropod will become inactive for a period of time, and then by crawling movements pushes forward in the old integument, which splits down the back allowing the animal to emerge.
During the resting period preparation is made by the secretion of fluid from the molting glands of the cellular layer and the loosening of the underpart of the cuticula.

Ecdysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ecdysis is the moulting of the cuticula in arthropods and related groups (Ecdysozoa).
In preparation for ecdysis, the arthropod becomes inactive for a period of time, undergoing apolysis (separation of the old exoskeleton from the underlying epidermal cells).
For most organisms, the resting period is a stage of preparation during which the secretion of fluid from the moulting glands of the epidermal layer and the loosening of the underpart of the cuticula occur.

Ecdysis in Saturniid moths is triggered by a peptide factor from the brain, identified as eclosion hormone (EH: see Drosophila Eclosion hormone).
The timing of ecdysis initiation is accomplished by ecdysteroid suppression of secretory competence in Inka cells until the animal is ready to perform the behavioral sequence and escape the old cuticle (Kingan, 2000).
Orchestration of ecdysis behavior therefore depends on coordinated expression of genes that are involved in peptide signaling (Park, 2002a and references therein).

 John Ewer - Research
The main project in the lab is understanding the mechanisms that controls ecdysis, the behavior that allows insects to shed their old cuticle.
The occurrence of ecdysis is tightly regulated, both by development, as well as by the biological clock (at adult emergence).
Thus, ecdysis behavior is a good model system for understanding how behavior is coordinated with development, how neuropeptides and neurohormones regulate behavior, and how the circadian (biological) clock causes behaviors to be express a circadian rhythmicity.

Ecdysis, or molting behavior, in insects requires the sequential action of high levels of ecdysteroids, which induce accumulation of ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH) in Inka cells, followed by low levels of ecdysteroids, permissive for the onset of the behavior.
Initiation of the ecdysis behavioral sequence in insects requires activation of the central nervous system (CNS) by pre-ecdysis-triggering hormone (PETH) and ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH), which are released from the Inka cells of the epitracheal glands.
Ecdysis of intact larvae is associated with the central release of eclosion hormone (EH) and elevation of cyclic 3',5'-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the ventral nerve cord.

Ecdysis may also enable damaged tissue and missing limbs to be regenerated or substantially re-formed, although this may only be complete over a series of moults, the stump being a little larger with each moult until it is of normal, or near normal size again.
The process of moulting in insects begins with the separation of the cuticle from the underlying epidermal cells (apolysis) and ends with the shedding of the old cuticle (ecdysis).
In many of them it is initiated by an increase in the hormone ecdysone.

The process where the exoskeleton is replaced is known as the molt, and culminates with the shedding of the remains of the old cuticle; this behavior is called ecdysis (Ewer 2005).
Ecdysis behavior occurs when the titre of 20E falls below the threshold and is controlled by a series of neuropeptides.
Also, ecdysis behavior was not initiated even when exogenous EH was injected into headless larvae.

MetalReview.com - Metal Review of Darsombra - Ecdysis
Ecdysis has plenty of what’s missing on so many ambient albums–--variety, songs that have distinguishable personalities, and the ability to draw the listener into a more active experience than the stereotypical background music.
Here he constructs a foundation of simmering ambience and adds layers of discordance, and it’s his grasp of judicious use of the economy of sound that keeps the album interesting.
Sections of Ecdysis, most notably on songs like “The Place Where There is No Darkness” and “Swelter”, employ the sparse, ethereal stratospheric ethic that’s typical to the genre, but over half of the album employs a more textured, full approach, with “My House” coming closest to a traditionally structured song.

The recent discoveries of the epitracheal endocrine system in insects and its secretory product, the ecdysis-triggering hormone (ETH), have revealed new insights into the endocrinology of ecdysis, the crucial stage through which insects must pass repeatedly during development from embryo to adult.
ETH triggers a series of complex centrally patterned motor behaviors leading to ecdysis and thus provides an excellent model system for examining the relationships between gene expression, development, and animal behavior.
