 dorehist.htm
Ecgbert and his army faced the Northumbrians in Dore, but they submitted to him without a fight and admitted his claim to be 'King of all the English'.
Most of England was in the possession of Ecgbert, originally an under king of Kent, who had routed the Mercians and had been accepted as king by the East Saxons, the Anglians and all the kingdoms south of the Humber.
In 800 at the decease of King Brithric, Ecgbert was called by the voice of his countrymen to assume the Government of Wessex, and he subsequently succeeded in reducing all the Kingdoms of the Heptarchy under his sway.

Egbert of Wessex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 815 Ecgbert ravaged the whole of the territories of the West Welsh, which probably at this time did not include much more than Cornwall; it is probably from his reign that Cornwall can be considered subject to Wessex.
Essex submitted to Wessex; while the East Anglians, who rose against Mercian rule and slew Beornwulf shortly afterwards, acknowledged Ecgbert as overlord.

BRETWALDA - LoveToKnow Article on BRETWALDA
In the Chronicle the title is given to Ecgbert, king of the English, the eighth king that was Bretwalda, and retrospectively to seven kings who ruled over one or other of the English kingdoms.
The seven names are copied from Bedes Historia Ecclesiastica, and it is interesting to note that the last king named, Oswiu of Northumbria, lived 150 years before Ecgbert.
With regard to Ecgbert the word is doubtless given as a title in imitation of its earlier use, and the same remark applies to its use in A~lthelstans charter.

His first wife, Elfgifu of Mercia bore him no less than 11 children: Athelstan, Ecgbert, Edmund, Edred, Edwig, Edgar, Wulfhild, Edgyrth, Elfgifu and a further two other daughters whose names are not commonly recorded.
The nickname of Unready is though to derive from the Saxon word meaning 'with no reputable policy' which can be taken as both accurate and ironic in that Ethelred is itself said to have meant 'noble policy'.
His second marriage, to Emma of Normandy, produced three children, Edward, Alfred and Goda.

Sheffield Visiting the City Tourist Attractions & Sightseeing Attractions & Landmarks King Ecgbert Memorial Orbitz Destination Guide
The Saxon shield which commemorates the event states "King Ecgbert of Wessex led his army to Dore in the year 829 against King Eanred of Northumbria by whose submission King Ecgbert became overlord of all England".
Dore was thus marked as an important place; important enough for this to be where Danish influence ceased and Saxon sovereignty began.
The event took place in AD 829 on what is now the village green at Dore, one of Sheffield's southern suburbs.

Dragon's Hoard - The archaeology of folkmagic
As Ecgbert's (Archbishop of York) Pontifical from the eighth century has it, "Wherever this bell sounds, let the power of enemies retire, so also the shadow of phantoms....
In a small church at Elsdon in Northumberland National Park three horse skulls were found in the small belfry.38 This indicates that they were placed there to serve a similar function to that of the bells, ie, to ward off evil spirits.
Other ways that the house could be protected were by written charms and curses.

Ember days - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
We find it laid down in the pontificate of Archbishop Ecgbert of York, A.D. 732 - 766, and referred to as a canonical rule in a capitulary of Charlemagne, and it was finally established as a law of the church in the pontificate of Gregory VII, ca 1085.
The rule once introduced commended itself to the mind of the church, and its observance spread.
The dates of their celebration are now determined by national hierarchies rather than by the universal Roman liturgical calendar, and they have been transformed into “days of prayer for peace."
