Echinocactus horizonthalonius is a species which covers a large habitat range from the Big Bend National Park in Texas almost as far south as Mexico City.
The illustration shows one of the magnificently spined northerly forms from the Big Bend Area.

In the early days of cactus classification, the genus Echinocactus was conceived of as a very broad category taking in many diverse globular cacti from both North America and South America.
Now, however, the name is restricted to 5 species native to Mexico and the southwestern U.S. These plants, along with members of the genus Ferocactus, are popularly known as barrel cacti.
Although there are not many species of Echinocactus, plants are abundant in nature over a wide area from the California deserts in the north down to northern Oaxaca.

Crisscrossing miles of badlands there was nothing but sweat, tears and stunted chollas enlivened only by meeting a lone desert tortoise as daft as me. In an attempt to recoup something positive from the day I dropped by the Calico Early Man excavations near Barstow for an entertaining guided visit.
The local name for the plant is 'cotton top' and true to name all the large specimens I saw in the Southwest had fruits encased in cotton wool as an aid to seed dispersal.
I was lucky enough to find the Sclerocactus that evening and exploring the habitat I also found Echinocactus polycephalus again along the crest of the rocky hills.
