  Echinoderm
"Echinoderms are truly strange animals because none of them has a head, or eyes, or other kinds of things we associate with animals.
All are built on a five-sided body plan, probably most obvious in the gorgeous starfish that you see in front of you.
Predators, detritus feeders, filter feeders, herbivores • Some are keystone species (exerting a disproportiante effect on their ecostystem's structure through their predation) • Humans use echinoderms as food, as a source of medicines, and as research subjects in developemental biology.

  Echinoderm - MSN Encarta
Echinoderm, common name for about 6000 living species constituting a phylum of marine animals, such as starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers.
An echinoderm such as the starfish typically has a mouth surrounded by five arms that bear minute, fleshy tube feet with which the animal clings and crawls.
Echinoderms are common on the ocean bottom at all depths; in the deep sea they often make up the bulk of living material.

 Echinodermata
The ossicles of echinoderms are connected by ligaments composed predominantly of collagen.
The fates of the various coelomic compartments vary among echinoderms, but some features seem broadly similar and may reflect a common evolutionary origin deep within the phylum: left mesocoel gives rise to most or all of the water vascular system, and one or both somatocoels form the lining of the body cavity.
In echinoderms, it is composed of: a thickened vessel (the "heart") lacking an endothelium and surrounded by a pericardium; a region where ultrafiltration occurs via podocytes; a closed circulatory system; and an opening to the external environment called the madreporite.

Echinoderms have always been noted for having a five-part symmetry to their bodies, which is most evident in the rays.
Echinoderms belong to a large group of animals called bilaterians and as such bear a basic bilateral symmetry - that is they have a right and left side.
Echinoderms with aberrant ray counts result from truncations of growth at some combination of these growth stages.

[Full text] Hox genes are not always Colinear
The genes in the 'other echinoderms' row are an amalgamation of sequences from Crinoids, Ophiuroids and Asteroids [27, 53, 57], and total fourteen different genes, which could potentially indicate the total number of Hox genes for the ancestral deuterostome.
Echinoderms are the sister group of hemichordates within the Deuterostome clade, and together as the Ambulacraria form a sister group to chordates [16, 17, 18, 19] (see figure 1).
Echinoderms do however possess Hox genes, and so examination of their organisation and function in these unusual animals can reveal how the Hox cluster changes in such a derived lineage, and conversely which aspects of Hox biology remain conserved relative to other triploblast animals.

eMedicine - Echinoderm Envenomations : Article by Scott A Gallagher, MD, FACEP
Pathophysiology: While most echinoderms are poisonous, and many have sharp spines or spicules capable of causing injury, only a few members of the Asteroidea, Echinoidea, and Holothuroidea classes are capable of causing venomous injuries in humans.
Causes: Echinoderms are slow moving and nonaggressive; injury and envenomation occur as the result of accidental exposure or careless handling.
No specific laboratory tests are indicated in the management of echinoderm envenomations; however, in cases of severe systemic symptoms (eg, hypotension, paralysis, respiratory failure), a complete workup to exclude other etiologies may be warranted.
