Tom Petty is one of a number of rockers who are not only still out there giving us their absolute best, but he is a master craftsman and songwriter who still delivers strong, potent music as if it were still his late 70s to late 80s heyday.
Petty has been hailed as a rock genius and one of the few rockers who tells it like it is in straight forward rock and roll.

To be blunt, much of Echo feels like a by-product of Petty's divorce from his wife of over 20 years; even the intoxicating hard rock of "Free Girl Now" has a layer of sorrow and regret.
Petty, Mike Campbell, and Rick Rubin (along with some help from George Drakoulias) keep the spirit of Wildflowers alive by keeping the production uncluttered, direct, and muscular -- which just reveals what a strong, versatile band the Heartbreakers are.
Although the album is spiked with sadness and regret, nothing on the album feels forced or self-conscious, either lyrically or musically -- and he is one of the few rockers of his generation that can make such a claim.

 Tom Petty's Echo | Apr 9, 1999
It's clear that this song headlines Petty's new album, but the tune is no "You Don't Know How It Feels." Although it does exude the same just-kickin'-it feel that is the hallmark of Petty's other hits, Petty's crackling voice now sounds more old-folk than old-skool.
In addition, tunes like the title track would be far better if Petty avoided his imitations of elementary-school sopranos and returned to his attempts to blur the line between singing music and smoking weed.
Echo may not be the hard-hitting Tom Petty you were expecting, but it's good enough.

While some believe Echo reflects unhappy traces of the end of Petty's long marriage and the baggage of life in Southern California, I think Echo sounds like vintage Petty: accessible, guitar-oriented pop, with a guitar sound that descends from The Byrds.

Petty's approval rating soared through the packed rafters Tuesday as he and his band of Heartbreakers rocked the house during a rousing celebration of music that showed exactly why they were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year.
