RAD Interview with Sonya Mandan of Echobelly
Consequently, after the feeding frenzy of the British press and Echobelly's rise to prominence in late 1994, it would be easy to write off Echobelly as succeeding solely due to Sonya and her endorsement from Morrisey.
Echobelly's narcissistic single "I Can't Imagine the World Without Me" was indie pop at its three minute best and they followed up with "Everyone's Got One" (or EGO if you prefer) which made the Top Ten in 1994 the UK.
Echobelly were part of the group of indie British bands that included Oasis and Gene and which came into prominence in 1994.

Echobelly formed in 1992 on the chance meeting between Sonya Aurora Madan and Glenn Johansson at a London club.
It also added to the pressure on Sonya (who is Indian) in interviews, as she was increasingly saddled with the position of being spokesperson for women and minorities.
Echobelly opened two shows for R.E.M., and has been credited with influencing Peter Buck's guitar stylings on 'Monster'.

Bio: Led by vocalist Sonya Aurora Madan, Echobelly fused the ironic, self-absorbed viewpoint of the Smiths with stylish Blondie posturing and a solid guitar crunch.
Defiantly politically correct, the group cultivated a fair amount of praise within the British press at the beginning of their career, but as the Brit-pop craze of the mid-'90s wore on, the group was slowly eclipsed by such contemporaries as Elastica and Sleeper.
By the summer of 1995, British indie guitar music had overtaken the pop consciousness, and Echobelly were poised to break into the mainstream.

Echobelly's petite but not necessarily sweet frontwoman, Sonya Aurora Madan, seems fascinated by the perverse--at least on record.
Like Morrissey's Smiths at their peak, Echobelly's head-bobbing compound of melancholy and exhilaration is oddly alluring, illustrating once again that the thrill of despair can be addictive as any infatuation.

Their blend of the Smiths, Blondie, and indie rock was hooky, assured, stylish, and sexy, and songs like "I Can't Imagine the World Without Me" and "Insomniac" were bracing singles that suggested their full-length would be a corker.
Echobelly had a hard time maturing, though, stumbling on its nevertheless pleasing second effort before trailing off into the sunset.
The 18-track collection I Can't Imagine the World Without Me: The Best of Echobelly traces that rise and fall all too accurately by giving equal credence to all eras of the band, when it would have been a better idea to skew it toward the first two records.

From 1993 through to 1999 the Echobelly trio of Sonya Aurora Madan (vocals) Glenn Johansson (guitar) and Andy Henderson (drums) had proved themselves to be classic pop song writers, with songs that swaggered and seduced as if Blondie had fused with The Smiths, only better.
Pragmatism would have dictated that they continued to make music within the limitations imposed by a big company, but Sonya, Glenn and Andy had concluded that the next phase of their journey would be far more exciting if they went off road.
Sonya has an angel's voice and Echobelly were truly one of the first of my most fave bands during the height of Brit Pop mania here in the States - and they deserved to be.

Echobelly - Biography - AOL Music
Led by vocalist Sonya Aurora Madan, Echobelly fused the ironic, self-absorbed viewpoint of the Smiths with stylish Blondie posturing and a solid guitar crunch.
By early 1994, they broke the Top 40 with "I Can't Imagine the World Without Me." Everybody's Got One, the band's debut album, was released in the fall of 1994 to positive reviews and strong sales within the U.K.; it was released in the U.S. in the spring of 1995 to little attention.
Though the band was plagued by some behind-the-scenes problems -- bassist Alex Keyser was replaced by James Harris after the recording of their second album, On -- they didn't quite manage to make the leap.

So, despite the fact that Echobelly counted the far from faceless Debbie Jones as a bass player, they were lumped in with Sleeper, Belly, Salad and so on.
Echobelly's trademark used to be infectiously catchy little pop songs married to some subversive lyrics, as on Give Her A Gun or I Can't Imagine The World Without Me. On Gravity Pulls, the intelligent wordplay remains but the melodies appear to have given way to a more 'mature' approach.
Fans who have followed Echobelly throughout their career can buy Gravity Pulls safe in the knowledge that it continues and refines the direction followed in their previous release People Are Expensive.

Their first EP 'Bellyache' (released on the independent Pandemonium label) was a veritable revelation to a world starved of such blatant pop excess and was soon followed, in 1994, by their debut album, 'Everyone's Got One' (released on their own label, Fauve).
With their instant pop sensibility and unique, voyeuristic outlook, it was no surprise that the band managed to smartly bypass all the pitfalls laid before them by an over enthusiastic music press and end 1994 with a Top 10 UK album and an undeniably successful world tour.
The Material Girl also put her money where her mouth is, offering Echobelly a cool million to sign with her label, Maverick, but the band turned down the offer and opted for Sony's smaller, more personal label, 550.

Echobelly is perhaps one of the most underrated bands of the mid 90's Britpop wave.
But the obvious centerpiece of Echobelly is the silky-sweet vocals of Sonya Madan, almost like a pixielike geisha, seductive yet packs a powerful punch.
But I've always found that Echobelly strays beyond the boundaries of typical mid 90's indie-pop, an ecclectic chemistry adding an unconventional spin to their sound.

Echobelly's fifth album goes farther in the mellow direction of 2001's "People Are Expensive".
Still, the sound on this album is SO good, with excellent production by Ian Grimble, Madan's lovely voice, and Glenn Johansson's tasteful guitar playing, that I'm tempted to give the album a fourth star, and I may come back at a later date and do so.
