Echobrain play the same kind of mind-bending jams and ultra-heavy riffs grafted onto shimmering pop, with Donkin's beguiling vocals hovering somewhere between Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and Grand Funk's Mark Farner.
Echobrain is a work in progress, but one you can't help but hope will hone their style.
Echobrain is the "brain child" of former Metallica bassiest Jason Newsted and two fresh faces in the music world, Brain Sagrafena and Dylan Donkin.

Newsted, 38, is producing an album by punk-metal behemoth Speedealer and anticipating the major-label debut of his trio EchoBrain.
EchoBrain's debut album is available on Newsted's own Chophouse label and may be reissued next year by Chris Blackwell's Palm Pictures.
Early next year, Newsted plans to re-enter the studio with EchoBrain and then join forces with veteran experimental metal band Voivod for their next, and possibly last, record.

 [fmSound] Concert Review - Echobrain
Echobrain charged into New York City, riding the hype of their critically acclaimed debut album.
The true measure of a great rock band is their ability to play live, this being said Echobrain succeeded in their New York City debut.
Newsted made a comment during the show that explained his strained relationship with Metallica “I’ve been playing with these guys (Echobrain) for seven years now, and I’m pleased and honored that you all finally get to hear our stuff.” It was obvious that Newsted was referring to Metallica’s policy of no side projects.

This was also one of the first stops on the ECHOBRAIN "Keep Me ((Alive)) Tour," and from past experience with bands like "Type O Negative" and "Queensryche" (and now ECHOBRAIN), the big sound system in a small venue can actually become quite annoying.
This was extremely obvious when the band took the stage and there wasn't much of a response from the audience until Newsted entered the stage a couple minutes after the rest of the band.
ECHOBRAIN is worth seeing and hopefully, by the time they get to your city, the "just getting their act together" part will be over.

Echobrain is the new band featuring former Metallica man Jason Newsted.
Overall, Echobrain really do combine a bit of everything and don't sound like anybody else long enough to make lots of comparisons (check out the moody "Keep Me Alive" with it's violin versus acoustic guitar structures for proof which can also be heard on other tracks).
Thus Echobrain has a striking amount of originality and accessibility and style which goes a long way in my book.

Sagrafena, the son of a drummer who spent a stint in the '70s San Francisco funk/soul band Sassafras, was never a Metallica fan, so his jam sessions with heavy metal royalty never really affected him, but his friend and musical collaborator Dylan Donkin was admittedly sweaty palmed upon meeting Newsted.
Tensions within the group escalated, and on January 17, 2001, Newsted announced that he was leaving the band due to "private and personal reasons." Despite veiled references to "the physical damage" incurred over the years with the notorious band, many suspected his departure was due in part to Hetfield's "with us or against us" policy.
EchoBrain's live debut came in August of 2001 at a showcase of Bay Area bands, joined on-stage by guitarist Chris Scianni and keyboardist David Borla (of the New York duo Dangerman).

 Ink 19 :: Echobrain
There is a fine line between exploring your musical boundaries and just making plain boring music, and Metallica haven't been too steady on their feet lately in that regard.
Bassist Jason Newsted jumped ship in time to concentrate full-time on Echobrain, a group of people he's been playing with for laughs for a few years already, retaining his credibility in the process.
Albums made by major bands' former bassists don't necessarily imply essential listening, as Bill Wyman demonstrates on a regular basis, and while Echobrain leave a bit to be desired, it's a nice surprise to discover that this album is, in fact, a remarkably well-rounded one.

Sagrafena brought singer-songwriter-guitarist Dylan Donkin to one of these sessions in 1996 and EchoBrain was born.

If you’ve kept up with the latest news on the Metallica front, it would appear that the three remaining members are chatting quietly with recently departed bassist Jason Newsted.
Having said that, I hope that if they indeed ask him back into the fold that he gives it some very, very careful deliberation, as Echobrain’s recent eponymous debut easily slays what the band he was once in is awkwardly attempting now with their silk shirts, short coiffures, goatees, mascara, and wallet-chains.

Rounded out by vocalist/guitarist Dylan Donkin and drummer Brian Sagrafena, EchoBrain serve up a lush, orchestrated version of alt-rock, creating a kind of grunge-goes-to-the-symphony sound.
The album, which was recorded before EchoBrain had ever played a live show, benefits from some moody strings provided by principal members of the San Francisco and National symphonies.
With their first tour under way, EchoBrain now will see if they can do on stage what they have managed to do so brilliantly on this debut: Create a sound that is comfortably familiar but gloriously new.

This is a warning for all the Heavy Metal fans who thought Jason Newsted’s new band Echobrain would carry the sound of his former mates Metallica; you should stop yourself from running to the record stores immediately.
With Echobrain, Newsted has avoided the shameful and lazy path previously taken by so many rockers who fled successful bands, merely re-producing the same sound under a different name (I am thinking Perry Farrell and Tommy Lee here).
Despite its few faults Echobrain is a deeply layered, innovative, and interesting album that delivers a rich musical experience, and promises more good to come from this trio.
