"Echoes" is a smooth progressive rock song with extended guitar and keyboard solos and a long segue in the middle consisting largely of synthesised whalesong produced on guitar, along with samples of seagull cries, described by Waters as a "sonic poem".
A song which first appeared in the movie, "When the Tigers Broke Free," was released as a single on a limited basis.
This song was finally made widely available on the compilation album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd and the re-release of The Final Cut.

With Roger Waters on bass, Richard Wright on keyboards, and Nick Mason on drums, Pink Floyd's chief songwriter and vocalist was guitarist Syd Barrett.
In their first feature film, Pink Floyd, Live at Pompeii (1971), "Echoes, "Careful with That Axe, Eugene," and "A Saucerful of Secrets" are performed in studio and at the amphitheater in Pompeii.
The band supplied a variety of instrumentals and vocal songs to compliment the imagery -- which descended from idyllic beauty to the decay of addiction.

 Crystal palace Garden party 1971
Dave Gilmour sings higher on here than on later versions of the song and it is interesting (albeit sometimes difficult) to hear the different lyrics.
Left and above: Messr's Gilmour and Waters at Crystal Place 1971, Gilmour adopts the playing stance that he was using when I saw him at Parliament Hill Fields in 1969, which indicates that he was jamming out more then normal for 1971.
There was definitely a Crystal Palace Garden Party on 31st July 1971 where Yes headlined (I think - they certainly played there 'cos I took photos and it was Peter Banks' last gig - they sacked him after it for mucking about ISTR but maybe that's rubbish) supported by Fairport Convention and some others.

It starts with "Milky Way", a great Syd Barret very rare song, and seems to be a "Best Of The RoIOs".
Pompeii, June 21 1971 - Echoes called "The Return Of The Son Of Nothing" at this time.
The introductory instrumental to the Pompeii film is heard just prior to "Echoes", but is unlisted in the liner notes.

Once Berry Gordy moved his base of operations from Detroit to L.A. in 1971, that distinct sound was fading and an era had ended (sigh).
Written and produced by The Corporation (Jackson 5), the song now sounds like a buoyant but strangely sad last-gasp of the ol' Motown spirit.
I like songs that move melodically may be call this modulating like Queens Boho Rap.
