With a history dating back thirteen years, echolyn continues to develop and redefine a compositional style best described as melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and dynamic - music that is progressive in the truest sense of the word.
This is the re-release of echolyn's 1995 Sony Music/EPIC Records debut, considered by many to be one of the most important progressive releases of the 1990's and one of the most uncompromising pieces of echolyn's musical output.
Echolyn is proud to announce the re-release of their 1992 album "suffocating the bloom" - an album that not only broke new ground in the world of progressive rock, but defined the sound of the band, attracted the attention of the recording industry, and helped to etch the name "echolyn" into progressive rock history books.

Their influences notwithstanding, Echolyn's trademark is their very sophisticated vocal harmonies, which range from melodious parallel parts to Gentle-Giant-style complexities.
For those who like their progressive songs on the long side, tracks 11 to 23 comprise the 30-minute epic "Suite For Everyman," which takes the band through all of its many styles and moods and is a masterpiece in its own right, overflowing with inventive music and amazing instrumentation.
Part of the reason for this is that their style is all over the map, leaping from quiet classical-like passages into sizzling jazz and back to blazing rock, yet combining these styles into a cohesive whole.

Their previous release, "Cowboy Poems Free", was a sharp histology of modern Americana, told with their usual, distinct sense of arranging and harmony, and was hailed by many as a proud addition to the Echolyn cannon.
Unfortunately, regardless of how adventurous the prog fans may like to pretend to be, Echolyn's ambitious experimental test of their mettle had mixed results, at best.
The composition is very complex, even by Echolyn standards, and it took me a long time to finally understand it from beginning to end.

Echolyn's greatest strength has always been their uncanny ability to craft music that fits nicely within the umbrella of progressive rock while still maintaining a mainstream "pop" sensibility.
The group's previous effort, As the World, established Echolyn as one of the premier American progressive rock bands on the basis of intelligent lyrics and unrivaled musicianship.
A song from Echolyn's 1992 self-released album Suffocating the Bloom included the lines, "I'm not sure I want/To sell to those that want to buy/Go through hell for those that want to buy." Rarely have lyrics been this foretelling.

When Echolyn broke through with Sony 550 Music in the mid 1990s, the major label not only released As the World but also gained the rights to their previously released material.
As a result, it appeared at one point that Echolyn's first two albums would languish in the Sony vaults until the end of time.
While their debut was spotty, all the trademark Echolyn elements are present here, from the quick changing instrumental bits to the overlapping multipart harmonies.

Echolyn - The End Is Beautiful
Variation is Echolyn's middle name, and in that sense they have not changed, in fact, after the relatively orchestral Mei and the Americana singersongwriter prog of Cowboy Poems Free, they have in fact returned more to the complexity of As The World.
On this album, Echolyn does use all their well known elements: excellent vocals and harmony passages, varied compositions and plenty of dynamics.
On the whole I think Echolyn has lost some of its songoriented compactness and conciseness of Cowboy Poems Free, and the orchestrality of Mei is also gone.
