Echt-Susteren was created by merging the former municipalities of Echt and Susteren.
Susteren harbours a Benedict monastery, Abbey Susteren, that was founded in the 8th century.
The name of the village of Roosteren (population circa 1600, including Kokkelert and Oevereind) was derived from a combination of the Rode Beek (Red Brook) and the town of Suestra (Susteren) leading to the name Roosteren.
Since 1 Jan 2003 Susteren is part of the new municipality of Echt-Susteren.

The former municipality of Echt also includes the following towns, villages and townships: Aasterberg, Berkelaar, Echterbosch, Gebroek, Hingen, Koningsbosch, Maria-hoop, Ophoven, Peij, Schilberg, Sint Joost, Slek, and has merged with Susteren to form Echt-Susteren.
