It quotes Jerome's own opening in its defence of the canonical gospels against rivals by stressing the importance of the number four and by showing that the canonical gospels are prophesied in scripture, most notably in the four rivers of Paradise and the four carrying rings of the Ark of the Covenant.
The standard gospel quaternities are therefore used in Clm 6233 as starting-points for a series of sophisticated theological and mystical expositions on the divine descent testified in the gospels.
This cosmic symbolism of the fourfold harmony of the gospels is echoed by the elaboration of traditional scriptural images of the four dimensions of Noah's Ark and the four carrying rings of the Ark of the Covenant as figures of the four gospels' united testimony in defending and supporting the Church against heresy.

The Durham Gospel an early book from the library of Lindisfarne is the first to use interlace (which is thought to have originated in Egypt)in its decoration, and a decorative initial letter with double headed snakes.
The artist of this small Gospel book shows great skill and assurance with his use of the pen and colour drawing on several different sources of inspiration which were drawn from a common pool of decoration shared by different monastic canters.
The Willibrod (Echternach Gospels) and Durham Gospels were thought to have been produced at the Lindisfarne scriptoria around 690 under the direction of the monk Egbert the possible master of Eadfrith, the scribe attributed to later masterpiece of illumination the Lindisfarne Gospels.

Three splendid Gospel-books were also produced at Lindisfarne: the Durham and Echternach Gospels, both the work of an artist-scribe termed the 'Durham-Echternach Calligrapher', thought to be an elder contemporary and possible master of Eadfrith, the maker of the third such book, the Lindisfarne Gospels.

The Heroic Age: The Ripon Connection? Willibrord, Wilfrid, and the Mission to Frisia
Echternach's calendar, often called Willibrord's Calendar, is the most informative surviving manuscript from the early years of his mission to Frisia.
Echternach was given to Willibrord as a fall back position in safer Frankish territory by Pippin's mother-in-law Irmina in 697-698 (Netzer 1989b: 128).
The Lindisfarnian influences at the Echternach scriptorium "coincides with the use of the Echternach Gospels as a source for decoration in the Trier Gospels" (Netzer 1989a: 211).

This entry records that "the great Gospel of Columkille, the chief relic of the Western World, was wickedly stolen during the night from the western sacristy of the great stone church at Cenannas on account of its wrought shrine".
It is probable that, like the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Books of Durrow and Armagh, part of the lost preliminary material included the letter of Jerome to Pope Damasus I known as Novum opus, in which Jerome explains the purpose of his translation.

The act of copying and transmitting the Gospels was to glimpse the Divine and to place oneself in its apostolic service and this may, on occasion, have been seen as a solitary undertaking on behalf of the community, rather than a communal collaboration, as with many aspects of Celtic eremitic monasticism.
This is interpreted as a multivalent image: depicting the author of the Gospel; exploring the symbolic witness of this Gospel; and emphasising, at the opening of a Gospelbook, the harmony of the Old and New Testaments.

None has addressed the question of why the Insular scribes employed such geometric methods, which are in some places extremely complex, nor have they looked at the meanings and messages implied by the use of geometry and the numbers associated with this art.
As these manuscripts are all gospels books and were produced in monastic environments, it seems reasonable to assume that such constructions were underpinned by theological considerations.

 Celtic Illuminated Manuscripts
The Durham Gospels are attributed to the same scribe that wrote the Echternach Gospels, although in it he is writing in a different script, much closer to the insular majuscule practiced by Eadfrith.
Eadfrith probably made the Gospels in the period immediately before the elevation of the relics of St. Cuthbert in 698, when he was still only a senior member of the community, possibly head of the monastic scriptorum.
Though it is the first of the manuscripts that we have left, the style and the artwork show the ŒCathach' to be neither experimental nor primitive in concept but obviously the result of an earlier tradition.

 The Book of Kells
There are mistakes in the Latin, and this fact has led several historians to speculate that parts of the Book of Kells may have been copied from similar manuscripts that were written around the same time.
These other manuscripts are: the Lindisfarne Gospels, the Durham Gospels, the Echternach Gospels, the Lichfield Gospels, the Book of Armagh, and the Book of Durrow.
It is the latter book - the Book of Durrow - which experts believe was copied in some parts by scribes of the Book of Kells - the errors in the two are practically identical.
